The Portuguese government is making significant strides in its dedicated AI model, known as “Amália.” This homegrown LLM model is progressing considerably and may already be in the beta phase. During a recent session on Innovation and Digitalization in Portugal at the Museum of Communications in Lisbon, researcher João Magalhães shared details about the progress made in the LLM model.
According to Magalhães, the model is still in beta version with room for improvement, but it’s already making significant progress. Currently, the model is only available to researchers affiliated with research centers. The LLM model has the ability to perform various tasks quickly, such as summarizing texts and generating ideas or texts. It is specifically designed to be based on the Portuguese language used in Portugal, rather than other existing variations.
Researchers aim to have a reliable version of the LLM model that can answer questions about the language, culture, and history of Portugal by the end of the third quarter of 2025. The final version of the model is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2026, with the ability to analyze and interpret various types of data.
Currently, the model focuses solely on analyzing text content, but future iterations may have the capability to analyze files and even images. It’s worth noting that “Amália” is an LLM model being developed by the government and created by the Minister of Youth and Modernization and the Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation. It is funded with an investment of 5.5 million euros from the PRR.

Technology Explained
LLM: A Large Language Model (LLM) is a highly advanced artificial intelligence system, often based on complex architectures like GPT-3.5, designed to comprehend and produce human-like text on a massive scale. LLMs possess exceptional capabilities in various natural language understanding and generation tasks, including answering questions, generating creative content, and delivering context-aware responses to textual inputs. These models undergo extensive training on vast datasets to grasp the nuances of language, making them invaluable tools for applications like chatbots, content generation, and language translation.
