Steam's latest data shows that Windows 10 has seen a significant increase in users, while Windows 11 has taken a hit, solidifying Windows as the dominant operating system for gamers on the platform.
- Steam is one of the most popular gaming platforms
- Windows is still the dominant force on Steam
- Windows 10 is holding its ground despite the buzz around Windows 11
One way to gauge the popularity of an operating system is to see where the majority of gamers are. And when it comes to gaming platforms, Steam is one of the most popular ones out there. It’s a treasure trove of information about what gamers are using. Every month, Steam releases details about its user base, and now that we’re in a new month, we can get a glimpse into February’s numbers.
According to Steam’s data, the number of users on Windows 11 took a significant hit in February, dropping to 44.10%. That’s a 9.36% decrease compared to the previous month. On the other hand, Windows 10 saw a considerable increase, climbing to 53.34%. That’s a 10.47% jump from the previous month.
Surprisingly, Windows 7 is still hanging on with 0.10% of users. Keep in mind that Windows 7 is no longer officially supported, and even the latest versions of Steam don’t work on it. So while this number may seem high, it’s pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
Overall, Windows is still the dominant force on Steam, with 97.58% of all users using some version of it. Linux comes in at 1.45%, and macOS trails behind with 0.97%.
It’s definitely interesting to ponder why Windows 10 made such a comeback in the market, especially considering that it’s set to lose support in October of this year. Many still consider it a “mature” system, and given the hardware limitations of Windows 11, that could be a deterrent for many users to switch.
So, what does this all mean? Well, it’s clear that Windows is still the go-to choice for gamers on Steam. Despite the buzz around Windows 11, it seems that Windows 10 is holding its ground. And while Linux and macOS have their small but dedicated fan bases, they still have a long way to go to catch up to Windows.
As we move forward, it’ll be fascinating to see how these numbers evolve. Will Windows 11 regain its footing? Will Linux or macOS make significant gains? Only time will tell. But for now, Windows remains the king of the gaming world on Steam.
