Unveiling Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Get ready to dive back into the captivating world of history with the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on March 20. This latest installment in the beloved franchise is set to enrich the gaming experience with a new feature called “Cultural Discovery,” which is all about exploring the fascinating history, art, and culture of the Azuchi-Momoyama period in Japan. Think of it as your personal time machine, packed with knowledge and stunning visuals.

A Treasure Trove of Knowledge

As part of the in-game Codex, Cultural Discovery offers players a carefully curated selection of over 125 entries at launch—almost double what we saw in the History of Baghdad feature from Assassin’s Creed Mirage. It’s not just a collection of facts; it’s an invitation to explore the rich tapestry of 16th-century Japan. Players will unlock articles covering everything from the economy and military affairs to daily life and significant historical figures as they traverse various sites throughout the game.

One standout entry features a stunning replica of a Kabuto, a traditional Japanese war helmet that symbolizes the first contact between Japan and Spain. This remarkable piece of history is part of one of Europe’s oldest collections of Japanese armor, housed at the Royal Armory in Madrid. After being damaged in a fire in 1884, a collaborative effort between Ubisoft, Patrimonio Nacional, and Spanish company Factum Arte has brought this relic back to life, allowing players to engage with history in a way that feels both personal and profound.

A Collaborative Effort

The partnership between Ubisoft and various historians has been nothing short of inspiring. Álvaro Soler del Campo, Head of the Royal Armory of the Royal Palace of Madrid, expressed the significance of this collaboration: “Working with Ubisoft has allowed us to recover the original appearance of a unique relic and preserve it in the digital world.” This initiative doesn’t just bring history to life; it also aims to engage younger audiences, using the platform of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to contextualize and share these stories globally.

Another highlight is the artwork of Osaka Castle, created by the late Gentaro Kagawa, who contributed significantly to the Cultural Discovery feature before his passing in December 2024. Kagawa was a celebrated historical research illustrator, and his work continues to leave a lasting impact on how we visualize Japan’s storied past.

Insights from Historians

The process of crafting the cultural codex was no small feat. Professor Pierre-Francois Souyri, one of the historians involved, described the challenge of distilling complex ideas into clear, concise entries. “I had to make choices—elaborating on one point while leaving out another,” he shared. But the effort was rewarding; it even inspired him to write a new book on ninjas!
