Introducing Ruffy and the Riverside
Hey there! I’m Patrick, the Art Director over at Zockrates Laboratories, the indie studio that’s been hard at work on our upcoming title, Ruffy and the Riverside. We’re thrilled to share that this vibrant platformer will be launching on Playstation 5 on June 26, 2025. It’s a big moment for us, and we’re proud to contribute to PlayStation’s legacy of innovative gaming experiences.
A Platformer Adventure Like No Other
So, what makes Ruffy and the Riverside stand out? Well, it’s not just your average platformer. Picture this: when Ruffy isn’t busy jumping, running, skating, or gliding, he’s wielding his incredible Swap ability. This unique mechanic lets you copy and paste textures to reshape the world around you. Need to cross a vast ocean? Just transform water into ice! Want to climb a waterfall? Toss a climbing vine into the mix. It’s as simple as that, but the possibilities are endless.
Imagine this: you can swap materials, turn the sun into the moon, or even make birds fall in love by coloring them the same. Apples taste better when they’re red, and certain bushes will reward you with coins if you give them a golden hue. And let’s not forget combat—why not freeze an enemy or turn them to stone mid-flight? The elements are at your fingertips, waiting for you to unleash your creativity. It truly feels like magic when you start swapping!
Embark on an Epic Quest
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Ruffy and the Riverside is a living cartoon packed with quests, quirky characters, and a treasure trove of collectibles. Everywhere you turn, you can chat with townsfolk, pick up side quests, and hunt for hidden gems.
Ruffy’s mission? To recover six golden letters scattered across far-off regions, each presenting its own set of challenges. Get ready to solve ancient mysteries, compete in thrilling skating contests, and even summon sunken islands from the depths of the sea. And don’t worry about getting lost—your trusty companions are always by your side. Pip, the sassy bee, will whisk you through the skies, while Sir Eddler, the adventurous mole, has all the tricks up his sleeve. And if you ever need wisdom, Sily, the wise turtle, is there to lend a hand.
A Hand-Drawn World Awaits
One of the standout features of Ruffy and the Riverside is its stunning art style. Everything you see is hand-drawn—every character, every texture, even the UI and map. Ruffy alone boasts over 600 unique drawings, each crafted from eight different angles to capture all his moves. It’s no wonder it took us seven years to bring this world to life! The result? A vibrant, Colorful universe just waiting for you to explore.
The Birth of the Swap
Curious about how we came up with the Swap mechanic? It’s a bit of a funny story. While working on level designs, I stumbled upon a black-and-white sketch of a waterfall. But it was hard to tell if it was a waterfall or a stream of lava. That’s when inspiration struck: what if it could be both? What if players could actually swap textures and transform their environment? And just like that, the Swap was born.
Nostalgia Meets New Adventures
Bringing Ruffy and the Riverside to PlayStation feels like a dream come true. We all grew up playing classics like Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank, and you can definitely feel those nostalgic vibes woven into our game. Watching Ruffy run on the Playstation 5 gives us the same thrill we felt as kids, and we hope it brings you that same joy when it launches.
