Google introduces FireSat satellite to combat forest fires

March 23, 2025 by our News Team

Google has launched its first satellite for the FireSat system, which uses AI and high-resolution images to detect and monitor potential forest fires in remote areas, with plans to expand the network to hundreds of satellites in the future.

  • Provides higher quality images for quicker identification of fires
  • Can detect fires in remote areas that are inaccessible to humans
  • Uses AI to compare current and past images for more accurate detection

Google has just launched its first satellite as part of its FireSat system, which aims to detect forest fires before they are even visible from Earth. This innovative project involves creating a network of satellites that will monitor specific areas on Earth to identify potential fire hotspots. By detecting fires early on, action can be taken before they spread to higher elevations.

Currently, the satellite imagery used by existing systems has low resolution, making it difficult to determine whether a fire is actually occurring. However, the satellites in the FireSat project will provide higher quality images that can quickly identify whether a fire is spreading.

One of the key advantages of FireSat is its ability to detect fires in remote areas that are often inaccessible to humans, such as dense forests and mountains. These fires can spread over large areas, sometimes for days, before they are detected by ground teams. With FireSat, these hotspots can be identified more quickly, allowing for better control and preparation for potential human intervention.

To achieve this, Google plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to compare current satellite images with past images of the same location. By evaluating the differences, the AI can determine whether there is a risk of a fire occurring. Google acknowledges that comparing and filtering out unnecessary “noise” from the images is a challenge, but believes that AI can greatly assist in this task.

While the FireSat network currently consists of only one satellite, Google has ambitious plans to expand the project to include hundreds of satellites in the coming years. This expansion will further enhance the system’s ability to detect and monitor potential fire outbreaks.

The launch of FireSat marks an important step in utilizing technology to combat the devastating impact of forest fires. By leveraging the power of satellites and AI, Google aims to provide earlier detection and more effective control of these natural disasters. With the ability to identify fires before they become visible to the naked eye, FireSat has the potential to save lives, protect ecosystems, and minimize the destruction caused by wildfires.
