Google is discontinuing two of its Nest smart devices, the Nest Protect CO alarm and Nest x Yale Lock, in order to focus on other products, but will still provide some support for the devices through alternative options.

  • Google is focusing on more important products
  • Users can still receive some level of support for the discontinued devices
  • There are plenty of alternative options available for both devices

Google has announced that it will be discontinuing two of its smart devices from the Nest line in order to focus on other more important products. The first device being discontinued is the Nest Protect, a CO alarm. This comes as no surprise, as the device has not been officially supported by the company for almost ten years, despite being discontinued. However, Google will still provide some support for the device in the US through the Google Home, by supporting the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm from Resideo. This means that users can still have some level of support, but Google will no longer provide updates or direct assistance.

In addition to the Nest Protect, Google will also be discontinuing support for the Nest x Yale Lock, which was launched in 2018 as part of Google’s foray into smart locks. These devices saw higher adoption rates in the US, while sales were relatively limited in the European Union due to certain service restrictions.

It’s interesting to see Google making these decisions to discontinue certain products in order to focus on others. It shows that even tech giants like Google have to make tough choices about where to allocate their resources. But what does this mean for consumers who have invested in these devices?

For those who still have the Nest Protect, the transition to the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm should provide some relief. While it may not be the exact same device, it offers a viable alternative that will continue to keep homes safe from CO and smoke. It’s good to know that Google is at least providing a solution for those who have relied on the Nest Protect.

As for the Nest x Yale Lock, it’s unfortunate that Google will no longer be supporting it. Smart locks have gained popularity in recent years, offering convenience and enhanced security. But fear not, as there are plenty of other smart lock options available on the market. From August to Schlage, there are several reputable brands that offer similar features and functionality. So, if you were considering getting a smart lock, there are still plenty of choices out there.

It’s worth noting that while these devices may be discontinued, it doesn’t mean they will stop working overnight. They will continue to function as they have been, but without any future updates or direct support from Google. So, if you’re happy with the way your Nest Protect or Nest x Yale Lock is performing, there’s no immediate need to panic.

In the ever-evolving world of technology, it’s not uncommon for companies to discontinue certain products to make way for newer and more innovative ones. It’s a natural progression that allows companies to stay competitive and push the boundaries of what’s possible. While it may be disappointing for some users, it’s important to remember that there are always alternatives available.

So, if you’re a Nest Protect or Nest x Yale Lock owner, take this as an opportunity to explore other options and see what else is out there. Who knows, you might just find a device that suits your needs even better. And remember, technology is constantly evolving, so there’s always something new and exciting just around the corner.
