Micron introduces their latest innovation, the Micron 4600 NVMe SSD, boasting Gen5 support and impressive data transfer speeds of up to 14.5 GBps, making it the first consumer-focused drive in the market.

Micron, the manufacturer, has just launched its latest innovation in the SSD market with the introduction of the new Micron 4600. This NVMe SSD is set to be the first in the market to support Gen5, boasting data transfer speeds of up to 14.5 GBps.
By utilizing Gen5 PCI-E, Micron claims that the NVMe can achieve data transfer speeds nearly double that of Gen4. It offers a sequential read speed of 14.5GBps and a sequential write speed of 12GBps. Additionally, it is designed to handle 2,100,000 IOPS for both read and write operations.
This new NVMe is undoubtedly aimed at high-performance applications such as AI model training, specifically LLM models. In fact, the drive outperformed other Gen5 NVMe drives by 11% in the PCMark10 benchmark. While there were already Gen5 NVMe drives available in the market, they were primarily targeted towards data centers and servers. Micron’s latest offering is the first to cater to consumers at large.
The Micron 4600 also boasts improvements in energy efficiency, resulting in a better price-to-watt ratio considering the drive’s final speed. It consumes a mere 8.5W of power at its maximum speed and is designed for a TBW (Total Bytes Written) range of 300-1,600TB.
Enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the Micron 4600 is expected to hit the shelves of major retailers in the coming weeks. With its impressive speed, energy efficiency, and consumer-focused approach, this NVMe SSD is set to make waves in the market.
