Apple has released the iPhone 16e, a more affordable option with a two-in-one camera sensor and some missing features compared to the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup.
- More affordable option compared to other Apple products
- Features latest chip and dedicated modem
- Two-in-one camera sensor with night mode, portrait mode, and 2x zoom
After nearly two years without any updates, Apple has finally released something that will succeed the iPhone SE line. The new iPhone 16e has recently been launched as the company’s more affordable option compared to its other product lines. This model comes with some “cuts,” which is what allows Apple to reduce the final price compared to its other products. One of these cuts is in the camera department, where the company has opted to use just one sensor.
According to Apple, the iPhone 16e features the same camera sensor found in the iPhone 16, but there are some noticeable differences in what it can do on both devices. First off, the iPhone 16e comes with Apple’s latest chip, the A18, which also gives it access to Apple Intelligence. At the same time, Apple is introducing the new dedicated C1 modem, which will be the first modem focused on the company’s devices.
As for the camera, this model has a “two-in-one” sensor, which basically takes the 48 MP sensor from the iPhone 16 and adds some extra functionalities to it. The sensor allows for night mode and portrait mode, as well as a two-times zoom. It also supports 4K@60fps video recording, but it lacks one feature found in the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup. The model does not have Photographic Styles, a mode available on all other iPhone 16 devices.
There is a rudimentary version of this feature, which has been implemented since the iPhone 13, but it’s not exactly the same as the one found in the latest versions of the device. Of course, these “cuts” were taken into account to try and minimize the final price as much as possible.
Furthermore, the camera on the iPhone 16e also doesn’t offer users Focus Control, Cinematic Mode, and Action Mode. There are also differences in the front camera, with some of the modes available on the more expensive models not being present on the cheaper model.
Despite the lack of these capabilities, the iPhone 16e is still one of the most affordable models from Apple currently available on the market… although in Portugal, the expected starting price is 739 euros.
