Xbox’s Commitment to a Greener Future

At XBOX, we’re on a mission to reshape how we design, build, and distribute our products—all with a keen eye on reducing our environmental impact. Why? Because we want to help Microsoft reach its ambitious goals of becoming a zero waste, carbon negative, and water positive company by 2030. It’s not just about saving the planet; it’s about enhancing the gaming experience for our vibrant community of players. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to game with a clear conscience?

Expanding Repair Options for Gamers

We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear: players want more support options when their Xbox consoles need a little TLC. So, we’re excited to announce an expansion of our repairability program! Now, if you ever find yourself in need of repairs for your Xbox Series X|S consoles—like the sleek Xbox Series S 1 TB in Robot White or the striking Xbox Series X 2 TB Galaxy Black Special Edition—you’ll have more ways to get back in the game.

Starting January 20, uBreakiFix by Asurion will become the first Xbox Authorized Service Provider to offer in-person repairs at nearly 700 locations across the U.S. That’s right! You won’t have to rely solely on the Microsoft Store anymore. Just check with your local uBreakiFix to see if they’re part of this exciting new initiative.

But that’s not all. We’re also making it easier for you to get your hands on replacement components. Now, you can purchase parts for your Xbox Series X|S consoles directly from the Microsoft Store or through the Microsoft Repair Hub on iFixit. Previously, you were limited to controller parts, but now you have options, even if your console is out of warranty. More choices mean less waste and longer-lasting devices—win-win!

Ditching Plastic Waste

Speaking of waste, we’re not stopping at repairs. At Microsoft, we’re committed to eliminating single-use plastics from our packaging by 2025. That means the packaging for the Xbox Series X|S consoles is now fully paper and fiber-based. No more plastic waste cluttering up our planet—just a cleaner, greener way to unbox your gaming gear.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

In just three years, Xbox has made significant strides toward helping Microsoft meet its sustainability goals. Thanks to our energy-saving interventions, we’ve prevented over 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e emissions. To put that into perspective, that’s like taking more than 3 billion car miles off the road!

Recent system updates have also improved how the Xbox Series S handles video content, leading to an impressive average reduction of nearly 10% in power consumption across all media apps. That’s not just good for the environment; it could also help you save a few bucks on your electric bill. To make sure you’re maximizing these energy-saving features, just head to Settings > General > Power options and turn on the Shutdown (energy saving) mode. It won’t affect your gameplay, but it will make a difference!

Collaborating for a Sustainable Gaming Future

The journey toward a more sustainable gaming future is ongoing, and we at Xbox are committed to pushing the envelope. We’re not in this alone; collaboration with game studios is key. We’re thrilled to see creators using the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit to develop energy-efficient games and find innovative ways to lessen their environmental impact.

Gaming brings joy to millions, but we also recognize its environmental footprint. Our promise to you is to keep working on minimizing that impact. We’ve set ambitious goals, and while the road to 2030 may be winding, we’re dedicated to empowering game creators and production teams with the tools they need to build a sustainable future.
