TikTok confirms restoration of access for American users and expresses gratitude to Trump, while also working on a solution to continue operating in the US under Biden's presidency.

  • TikTok is restoring access for American users after being blocked by the US government.
  • The platform is working on an agreement with service providers to restore TikTok in the US quickly.
  • There is a possibility that the deadline for TikTok to continue operating in the US may be extended for another 90 days.

Less than 24 hours after being blocked by the US government’s orders, TikTok now confirms that it is restoring access for American users. In a message posted on X, TikTok states that it is working on an agreement with various service providers to restore TikTok in the US as quickly as possible. In fact, they mention that some users may already have access.

In the same message, the platform expresses gratitude to Donald Trump, who will enter the White House tomorrow, January 20th, and is considering extending the deadline for TikTok to continue operating in the US for another 90 days. The platform also states that they will work with Trump’s team to find a lasting solution for keeping the video platform in the US.

Several users in the US are also confirming that they have regained access to the platform, despite the message that appeared earlier in the day. However, although those who have the app installed on their devices can access it, the app is still not available on the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. CapCut, another app that was also blocked, seems to be inaccessible as well.

It’s worth noting that hours before the block, the White House, under Joe Biden’s presidency, indicated that there was no obligation to block TikTok and that the measure would only be implemented as a strategy. The decision to block would be up to Trump, and he could then decide what to do with it, but President Biden would not be forced to block it.

However, TikTok maintained its position that it couldn’t remain active in the US without guarantees that the service providers enabling its operation wouldn’t be penalized.

Furthermore, Trump also appealed, via Truth Social, to service providers not to leave TikTok “in the dark,” indicating that no sanctions would be imposed on those who kept the platform active.

Finally, Trump also proposed a plan for TikTok, which could involve selling 50% of the company to a new entity in the US to keep the platform active in the region.
