Pebble is making a comeback… well, sort of. This week, Google announced that it will be releasing the source code for the operating system used in the original Pebble devices, making it open source. As a quick refresher, Google now owns all of Pebble’s assets after acquiring Fitbit. And now, the company has decided to open source the system’s code, allowing anyone to use it for future creations or adaptations.
It seems that there are already interested parties looking to make use of this code, with Eric Migicovsky, the creator of the original Pebble, expressing interest in future products. Google states that the PebbleOS code includes almost all of the software, except for some proprietary parts associated with chips and Bluetooth. However, the company also assures us that finding substitutes for the unavailable code won’t be difficult and can be quickly adjusted for other chips and hardware in general.
The original founder of Pebble confirmed on his personal blog that opening up the device’s source code will undoubtedly be an exciting step forward, potentially fostering creativity for the future. He also revealed his interest in using it for future creations and projects, possibly for a device that could replace the Pebble. He hinted at a product featuring an e-paper display, exceptional battery life, and some interesting features for the current market. However, despite the idea, he didn’t provide any confirmation on whether or when he will launch something, but he did indicate that it is definitely in the works.
If you’re interested, you can check out the system’s source code directly on GitHub.
