Google's Play Store protection system blocked a record-breaking 2.3 million malicious apps in 2024, thanks to a new AI-powered threat verification system, while also preventing excessive permissions and implementing improvements to Google Play Protect.
- Google Play Store is a go-to platform for Android users to download apps
- Google blocked a whopping 2.3 million apps from being submitted to the Play Store in 2024 alone
- Google's integrated protection system, Google Play Protect, received several improvements in 2024
The Google Play Store is one of the go-to platforms for Android users to download apps. However, it’s also a prime target for malicious apps trying to infiltrate and reach as many users as possible. Recently, Google shared some insights into its Play Store protection system, revealing that in 2024 alone, they blocked a whopping 2.3 million apps from being submitted to the Play Store. These apps were either in violation of platform terms or posed a risk to user and device security.
To put things into perspective, in 2023, Google blocked over 2.28 million malicious apps, and in 2022, the number stood at 1.5 million. The significant increase in blocked apps last year can be attributed to the implementation of a new threat verification system powered by AI. This system combines automated checks with human evaluation, resulting in 92% of violations being identified and blocked using this method.
In addition to blocking apps, Google also prevented 1.3 million apps from using excessive permissions on users’ devices and systems, potentially accessing more private information than necessary. These apps were either restricted or their developers were required to adjust the permissions they requested.
Google’s integrated protection system, Google Play Protect, which safeguards all Android devices and the Play Store, received several improvements in 2024. It became more effective at blocking threats, including schemes, and analyzing apps installed from external sources outside the Play Store.
According to Google, the company analyzes over 200 billion apps daily, with a significant number of potentially malicious apps being blocked. Outside of the Play Store, Google’s protection system identified over 13 million new malicious apps.
Looking ahead, Google promises to further enhance its system this year, introducing new measures to combat emerging threats to Google’s systems. With these ongoing efforts, Google aims to ensure a safer and more secure app experience for all Android users.
