Microsoft recommends using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app, which is still available in Windows 11, for securely backing up data despite being unsupported for over seven years.
- Allows for secure backup of data
- Can restore data when needed
- Functions perfectly within Windows 11
As Windows 10 approaches the end of its official support, many users are considering their options for backing up their data and migrating to a new system. While Windows 11 comes with several new and updated applications to take advantage of the latest features, there’s still one that Microsoft recommends from the Windows 7 era.
In a new support document, Microsoft highlights some existing tools for Windows 10 and 11 that allow users to securely back up their data. Interestingly, one of the recommended applications is still “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” – an app from the Windows 7 era that was directly related to its control panel.
The Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app was theoretically phased out by Microsoft with the arrival of Windows 10 version 1709, over seven years ago. However, it still exists in recent versions of Windows 11 and remains one of the recommended backup applications in Microsoft’s official documents.
This application allows users to perform a complete backup of their system data to other disks, as well as directly restore data when needed. Although its appearance may be a bit different from what you’ll find in Windows 11, it still functions perfectly within the new operating system.
It’s worth noting, though, that while the app allows for data backup, it doesn’t support creating a complete copy of the system or saving direct configurations.
However, it’s important to mention that this application is currently unsupported by Microsoft and hasn’t received any updates or fixes for over seven years. So, there may be better alternatives to consider than this one, even if Microsoft still recommends it.
