Bluesky, the popular social media platform, is taking a stand against identity theft. With a growing number of users flocking to the platform, the security team at Bluesky is implementing more aggressive measures to combat impersonation. This means that accounts pretending to be someone else, whether it’s a regular user or a public figure, will face consequences like being banned or blocked.
But it doesn’t stop there. Bluesky is also cracking down on accounts that are registered solely to secure a specific name or handle, without any verification of their authenticity. This is particularly concerning because Bluesky doesn’t have a direct verification system in place, making it relatively easy for someone to create a fake account.
In an effort to add some legitimacy to the platform, Bluesky has been associating account handles with domain names. This helps ensure that the accounts are tied to legitimate entities. However, even with this measure, there are still ways to bypass the rules.
According to platform data, a staggering 44% of the most followed accounts on Bluesky, which use their own domain names as handles, are actually representing individuals or entities unofficially. These accounts were created solely to secure the name or to imitate others. While accounts showing appreciation for public figures or companies are allowed, they must clearly indicate that they are fan accounts. In all other cases, these new terms give Bluesky the authority to remove or suspend accounts.
It’s worth noting that these terms also apply to accounts that were originally created with one name, only to later change it in order to exploit their existing followers for other purposes. These accounts are also at risk of being blocked or suspended.
These new terms are effective immediately, meaning they apply to all existing accounts as well as any future accounts that are created. Bluesky is taking a proactive stance to ensure a safer and more authentic user experience on its platform. So, if you’re a Bluesky user, make sure your account is in line with these new guidelines to avoid any unwanted surprises.
