Microsoft is ramping up campaigns to incentivize users to upgrade to Windows 11 before Windows 10 loses official support in October 2025, potentially implementing full-screen promotional messages and offering a system support extension package for home users.
- Official support for Windows 10 will end in 2025
- Microsoft is incentivizing users to upgrade to Windows 11
- Users can extend system support for Windows 10, but eventually will need to upgrade to Windows 11
Windows 10 is set to lose official support from Microsoft on October 14, 2025, which is less than a year away. This means that the company is now encouraging more users to upgrade to the latest version of the operating system.
To further incentivize users to make the switch to Windows 11, Microsoft may soon ramp up its campaigns, which could include some “inconveniences” in the system. Similar to what happened with older versions of Windows, Microsoft may start implementing an upgrade incentive system that displays promotional messages for Windows 11 to Windows 10 users in full-screen mode.
These messages would randomly appear at different times, such as during system startup or after login, and would highlight some of the improvements in Windows 11 compared to Windows 10. The company is currently testing this “advertising” on a small percentage of Windows 10 users, but the idea is expected to reach more users as the end of support date approaches.
While Windows 11 has gained a decent market share, it still has a long way to go to catch up with its predecessor, Windows 10. These incentives may encourage more users to upgrade, if only to avoid the constant flood of upgrade messages from Microsoft.
However, it’s important to note that not all systems can directly upgrade to Windows 11, depending on their hardware. Some systems with older components may not be able to perform this upgrade, at least not officially.
For those who wish to continue using Windows 10 even after the end of support date, Microsoft is offering a system support extension package, which is now available for home users as well. Previously, this package was only focused on businesses. While this may allow users to keep their systems updated for a longer period of time, it does not replace the eventual need for Windows 11 to be the designated system for everyone.
