The Tor project is calling on the community to help fight against government censorship in various countries. They are seeking assistance in adding 200 new tunnels to the network by the end of the year. These tunnels, known as WebTunnels, are used by users in regions where there is heavy government censorship. They provide privacy and access to content that would otherwise be inaccessible.
One such region is Russia, where authorities block a wide range of information from the outside world. Many users in Russia have turned to Tor as a way to bypass these restrictions. The Tor project believes that adding more WebTunnels will make it easier for users to access external platforms in highly censored regions.
WebTunnels are a newer form of bridges within the Tor network, introduced in March 2024. Despite being relatively new, they offer a higher level of privacy and security. They are also more difficult to block, as they blend in with regular web traffic and all communications are encrypted.
For operators and governments attempting to censor connections, WebTunnel traffic appears as regular HTTPS connections, making it more challenging to block. The project’s campaign aims to increase the number of available WebTunnels by the end of the year.
By expanding the network and adding more WebTunnels, Tor hopes to empower users in censored regions and ensure their ability to access information and platforms that would otherwise be restricted. This collaborative effort is crucial in the ongoing fight against censorship and the preservation of online privacy and freedom.
