After a security flaw was discovered in Palo Alto Networks’ firewalls, hackers wasted no time in actively exploiting it. Hundreds of firewalls have already been compromised, and experts believe that the numbers will only continue to rise in the near future.
The vulnerabilities lie within the PAN-OS management system, which is used in certain Palo Alto Networks firewalls. When exploited, these flaws allow attackers to remotely access the device and send commands to it.
Although the flaw was only publicly disclosed this week, the manufacturer has been notifying customers since November 8th to restrict remote access and prevent attacks. The company is currently investigating the flaws and the recent wave of attacks that have been targeting them.
According to Palo Alto Networks, the attacks began on a large scale on November 18th, originating from IPs associated with VPN platforms. Now that the vulnerabilities are known, it is expected that the number of attacks will significantly increase in the coming days.
While the company claims that the flaws and attacks only affect a small percentage of devices, recent data suggests that the numbers could be much higher. The Shadowserver platform reported this week that there were 2,700 vulnerable systems ready to be attacked. Furthermore, they stated that nearly 2,000 of these devices have already been compromised since the wave of attacks began.
Given the severity of these vulnerabilities, it is highly recommended to take measures to prevent their exploitation. One effective step is to restrict access to the firewall management interface only to internal networks.
It’s important to stay vigilant and ensure that your systems are up to date with the latest security patches. Cybersecurity is an ongoing battle, and it’s crucial to stay one step ahead of the hackers. So, keep an eye out for any updates from Palo Alto Networks and take action to protect your devices. Stay safe out there!

Technology Explained
VPN: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a technology that allows users to securely access a private network and share data remotely through public networks. It is commonly used in the computer industry to provide secure remote access to corporate networks, allowing employees to access their work files and applications from any location. VPNs also provide a secure connection for online banking, shopping, and other activities that require a secure connection. Additionally, VPNs can be used to bypass geographic restrictions and censorship, allowing users to access websites and services that may be blocked in their country.
