Several governments are taking measures to push Apple to open up its ecosystem and make it more accessible to third parties. One of these governments is Brazil, and their focus is on the App Store.
The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) in Brazil has given Apple an ultimatum: open up the App Store, their app platform, or face consequences. According to the ultimatum, Apple has 20 days to allow in-app purchases to bypass the Apple payment system, or they could face fines of up to $43,000 per day.
The idea behind this ultimatum is to force Apple to let developers use third-party payment systems within their apps, without being forced to use Apple’s payment platform, which comes with its own fees. Additionally, Apple must allow developers to use links or references to other places where users can subscribe or purchase items, even if it means redirecting them to other apps like a payment app.
There are also measures that affect app distribution. Apple must allow developers to distribute their apps on platforms other than just the App Store.
This move by Brazil follows similar changes made in Europe, where Apple was one of the most impacted companies. They had to make several changes to comply with local laws and open up their ecosystem.
So far, Apple has not commented on this ultimatum, but it’s clear that they will have to make some changes if they want to avoid fines in Brazil. It will be interesting to see how Apple responds and what impact this will have on their global operations.
