During the Web Summit, the Portuguese government confirmed the development of their own AI model. And now, the official name for this model has been revealed: Amália. Named after the iconic national fado singer, Amália Rodrigues, this AI model is set to launch in 2026.
Back on November 11th, during the opening of the Web Summit, the Prime Minister announced that Portugal would have its own AI model. At the time, no details were provided, but now we have some new information. Paulo Dimas, CEO of the Center for Responsible AI, confirmed to the Lusa news agency that the national LLM model will be called Amália. This project is a collaboration between the Center for Responsible AI, Nova FCT, and the Instituto Superior Técnico.
Dimas mentioned that the model will not be released with all its capabilities initially, and it won’t be perfect right from the start. However, improvements will be made over time to optimize its tasks. In the months leading up to the official launch, enhancements will be implemented to fine-tune its performance.
The project will focus on three key aspects: the Portuguese language variant, cultural representation, and data protection. While the first details are expected to emerge in the first half of 2025, the final launch is scheduled for 2026.
Dimas explained, “We will be building upon the work already developed by these research centers. So, there have been several years of work in this field, both in terms of Portuguese language data, work done by the research center at Nova Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT), work done within Técnico, and there is also work that will be transferred from Unbabel, leveraging all their experience in creating multilingual models and models currently being trained on supercomputers.”
It’s exciting to see how this AI model will integrate into various projects and potentially modernize existing platforms and services, particularly in government and the public administration sector.
With the name Amália, paying homage to the beloved fado singer, this AI model aims to make a significant impact in Portugal and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!

Technology Explained
LLM: A Large Language Model (LLM) is a highly advanced artificial intelligence system, often based on complex architectures like GPT-3.5, designed to comprehend and produce human-like text on a massive scale. LLMs possess exceptional capabilities in various natural language understanding and generation tasks, including answering questions, generating creative content, and delivering context-aware responses to textual inputs. These models undergo extensive training on vast datasets to grasp the nuances of language, making them invaluable tools for applications like chatbots, content generation, and language translation.
