Microsoft has improved the Windows 11 update process to be faster, more efficient, and use less resources, resulting in quicker installation and less impact on daily usage.
- Updates are expected to install faster and require fewer processing resources.
- Updates will be installed more quickly and require less Windows restart time.
- The new update format saves approximately 200 MB of total size for updates.
Microsoft has been optimizing the way Windows 11 updates are delivered, aiming to make them faster and more efficient. Alongside the new 24H2 version of the system, there are some changes that may not be immediately visible but will certainly be felt by anyone using the system.
According to Microsoft, future monthly security updates for Windows 11 are expected to install considerably faster and require fewer processing resources. This is due to several changes made to the system update process.
With this new process, updates should be installed more quickly and require less Windows restart time. As we know, Windows needs to restart for updates to be fully installed, and users may have to wait several minutes for the process to complete.
The new update format from Microsoft now places updates on modules, where only what is necessary is actually downloaded. For example, in the case of Edge, with each security update provided for Windows, several services and files associated with Edge needed to be installed, even if Edge itself was not directly updated.
With the new process, this task is no longer necessary, resulting in approximately 200 MB of total size savings for updates – and the files that would have needed to be installed.
At the same time, the company will begin optimizing installation tasks to use more RAM as content cache. Although this may increase RAM usage in the system, it should have less impact on users’ day-to-day usage – allowing updates to be done in the background without affecting the use of Windows.
Microsoft’s tests indicate that with these changes, updates can be up to 45% faster, use 25% less processor, and be installed up to 40% more quickly after restart.
