Samsung announces mass production of PM9E1, a PCIe 5.0 SSD with improved performance, storage capacity, power efficiency, and security, including a 4TB option, for faster data transfer and on-device AI applications.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced the mass production of the PM9E1, a PCle 5.0 SSD that boasts the highest performance and largest capacity in the industry. With its 5-nanometer-based controller and eighth-generation V-NAND technology, the PM9E1 offers improved performance, storage capacity, power efficiency, and security compared to its predecessor.

The PM9E1 features an eight-channel PCIe 5.0 interface, resulting in sequential read and write speeds that have more than doubled compared to the previous generation. This translates to speeds of up to 14.5 gigabytes-per-second (GB/s) for sequential reads and 13GB/s for sequential writes. These impressive speeds enable faster data transfer, even with data-intensive AI applications.

The SSD is available in various storage options, including 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and a whopping 4TB, which is the largest capacity in the industry. The 4TB option is particularly suitable for PC users who require high-capacity storage for large files, AI-generated content, data-heavy programs, high-resolution videos, and gaming.

In addition to its performance and storage capabilities, the PM9E1 also offers improved power efficiency of over 50%, resulting in longer battery life. This is especially beneficial for on-device AI applications.

To enhance security, Samsung has implemented the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) v1.2 in the PM9E1. This specification includes technologies such as ‘Secure Channel,’ ‘Device Authentication,’ and ‘Firmware Tampering Attestation’ to prevent supply chain attacks and manipulation of stored data during production or distribution processes.

Samsung plans to expand its advanced SSD offerings to global PC makers, starting with the PM9E1. The company also aims to launch PCIe 5.0-based consumer products in the future, solidifying its position as a leader in the on-device AI market.
