Google's SynthID technology, now open source, creates invisible watermarks to quickly identify content generated by AI tools, potentially aiding in the prevention of misleading content and being integrated into various platforms.
- Open source availability allows for wider use and integration into various platforms
- Helps prevent the spread of misleading content generated by AI
- Can be used for various types of content, including images, audio, text, and videos
Google is expanding the accessibility of its SynthID technology, which is designed to mark content created by AI. Previously only available for content created using Google’s own AI, SynthID is now open source, allowing any project to utilize it. The purpose of SynthID is to create a watermarking system that quickly identifies content generated by AI tools. This enables the swift identification of artificially created content.
Watermarking systems have become crucial for AI training models, as they help prevent the spread of potentially misleading content. Some countries and states are considering making content marking tools mandatory, given the increasing prevalence of AI technology in our daily lives.
Google introduced SynthID in August of this year. It can add invisible watermarks to various AI-generated content, including images, audio, text, and videos, making them easily identifiable in other systems. Currently integrated into Gemini, the opening up of SynthID is expected to make it available on even more platforms.
While Google acknowledges that the technology may not completely prevent the misuse of AI for disinformation purposes, it still holds significant potential in combating such cases.
