Omdia predicts that this segment, which includes monitors with refresh rates over 120 Hz, will see a whopping 9% year-on-year growth, reaching a staggering 24.7 million units by 2024. That’s a lot of pixels and a lot of immersive gaming experiences.

But that’s not all. The smart monitor market is also on the rise, with a projected 63% year-on-year growth to 1.2 million units in 2024. These smart monitors come equipped with operating systems and streaming service portals, blurring the lines between traditional desktop monitors and TVs. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, desktop monitor shipments hit 30.7 million units, marking a solid 5% increase compared to the previous year. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the industry has shown remarkable resilience and has been steadily growing since the third quarter of 2023. It seems like we just can’t get enough of these screens.

So, what’s driving this growth? Well, it all comes down to added value and high functionality. Both gaming monitors and smart monitors offer unique features that enhance our user experience. According to Hidetoshi Himuro, Senior Principal Analyst at Omdia, monitors are following in the footsteps of TVs by becoming smarter and more versatile. The goal is to maximize the content they can handle and broaden the user experience, particularly in the gaming and smart monitor sectors. It’s all about giving us more bang for our buck.

When it comes to dominating the smart monitor market, Samsung and LGE from South Korea are currently leading the pack. Acer is also stirring up this space, and we can expect other brands from Taiwan, the US, and China to join the party soon. As for gaming monitors, there’s even potential for non-gaming monitors to join the high Refresh Rate club. That means we could see a whole new wave of monitors with mind-blowing refresh rates hitting the market.

Looking ahead, Omdia forecasts that the gaming monitor market will continue its upward trajectory, reaching 27.4 million units by 2028. The smart monitor market is also expected to grow, with a projected 2.1 million units by the same year, including demand from B2B applications. It’s safe to say that these screens are here to stay.

In 2024, the smart monitor market is set to hit 1.2 million units, thanks in large part to TV system-on-chip (SoC) technology. These integrated operating systems are what set smart monitors apart from their traditional counterparts. And when it comes to TV SoC vendors, MediaTek, Novatek, and Realtek are leading the charge. Together, they’re expected to capture a whopping 84% market share in 2024.

But it’s not just about the hardware and software. Himuro points out that there are separate issues in the smart monitor market depending on the vendor type. He anticipates that four operating systems – Tizen, WebOS, AOSP China, and Google – will become key players in 2024-25.
