CES Las Vegas, Computex Taipei

Frore Systems' AirJet solid-state cooling technology, showcased at CES and Computex, has already been adopted by a major external SSD vendor and has the potential to significantly improve performance and temperature for devices such as laptops and external drives.

  • The AirJet technology has been proven to significantly improve performance in various devices, including laptops and external SSDs.
  • Frore's AirJet technology has already been adopted by a major external SSD vendor, indicating its effectiveness and potential for widespread use.
  • The compact size and scalability of the AirJet coolers make them suitable for a wide range of devices, providing a versatile cooling solution for the tech industry.

Frore Systems has been stirring up the tech industry with their innovative fanless solid-state air cooler technology. Known as the AirJet, this cooling solution was first showcased at CES earlier this year and has now returned with new demonstrations at Computex.

At the event, Frore presented a range of demonstrations in a spacious showroom, targeting various products such as Tablets, notebooks, small PCs, and embedded tablets. However, two particular showcases stood out among the rest: a Samsung Galaxy Book with and without the AirJet, and an external enclosure housing an 8 TB Sabrent SSD.

The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro, a sleek and slim notebook, typically relies on a fan for cooling. However, Frore argues that the stock laptop’s fan fails to adequately perform its job. According to the company, the original laptop can only sustain 12W of heat/power before reaching its maximum temperature (Tmax). In contrast, when equipped with Frore’s AirJet, the notebook can maintain steady-state operation at 16W, resulting in improved performance. For instance, in terms of Cinebench R23 multi-threaded results, the modded notebook scored 5330 points compared to the off-the-shelf Galaxy Book 2 Pro’s 4255 points.

Frore’s AirJet solid-state cooling technology extends beyond CPUs. The company also showcased the AirJet Mini on Sabrent’s 8TB SSDs housed in Orico external enclosures. This demonstration highlighted the advantages of active cooling over passive cooling. The passively-cooled drive reached a temperature of 62°C and achieved a speed of 1,320 MB/s before thermal throttling kicked in. In contrast, the AirJet-cooled drive maintained a temperature of 42°C and achieved significantly higher performance at 3,016 MB/s.

The remarkable improvement in both temperature and performance has already led to a major external SSD vendor adopting Frore’s AirJet technology. Although the company remains tight-lipped about the vendor’s identity, they describe it as a “big name.”

It’s worth noting that Frore’s AirJet Mini and Mini Slim Coolers can dissipate up to 5W of power each and can be combined to form larger blocks of up to 5 coolers. While there are scalability limitations, making it more suitable for lower-power devices, the ability to remove 25W of thermal energy from a modern laptop without a fan can have a significant impact on the performance of these passively-cooled devices.

While showcasing the AirJets at Computex is undoubtedly impressive, Frore’s ultimate goal is to secure a deal with a major PC vendor such as Apple or Samsung. However, before that can happen, Frore must pass qualification tests and ensure the availability of its products, which the company is actively working on. From a performance standpoint, especially considering their compact size, the AirJets are undeniably impressive.

Technology Explained

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
