FlexEnable's collaboration with Ledger and other partners has resulted in the first-ever mass-produced consumer product with organic transistor technology, the Ledger Stax, featuring a credit card-sized form factor and a 180-degree bendable E Ink display, paving the way for new possibilities in the display industry.

  • The first consumer product to incorporate organic transistor technology is now shipping.
  • The product has a credit card-sized form factor and a 180-degree bendable E Ink display.
  • The manufacturing of these organic thin-film transistors is the first and only technology currently in mass production.

In an exciting development for the world of flexible organic electronics, FlexEnable has announced that the first consumer product to incorporate organic transistor technology is now shipping. The product in question is the Ledger Stax, a secure crypto wallet created by the leading French company Ledger. What sets this device apart is its credit card-sized form factor and its E Ink display that wraps around a 180-degree bend.

This impressive display radius of curvature has never been achieved before in an e-paper display product. It was made possible by FlexEnable’s highly flexible organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), which are composed of organic materials and process IP developed, supplied, and licensed by FlexEnable. The manufacturing of these OTFTs is the first and only organic transistor technology currently in mass production.

Unlike traditional displays that are made of silicon and manufactured on glass, these OTFTs are made of polymers and are directly manufactured onto plastic sheets. This makes them much thinner, lighter, and shatterproof compared to their glass counterparts. The manufacturing of flexible OTFT backplanes by Giantplus, a leading Taiwanese display maker, opens up new possibilities for flexible displays and optical modules. Imagine applications like AR/VR optics, ePrivacy screens, automotive smart Windows, and Organic LCDs with form factors that were previously unimaginable.

Chuck Milligan, the CEO of FlexEnable, expressed his pride in collaborating with Ledger and their dedication to bringing new technology to market. He also commended DKE and Giantplus for their contributions in achieving the first-ever 180-degree bend lamination of flexible ePaper displays and implementing FlexEnable’s unique transistor materials and patented low-temperature process technology into mass production.

The launch of Ledger Stax is a significant milestone not only for FlexEnable but for the entire display industry. And this is just the beginning. The billion-dollar ePaper display market is set to expand as FlexEnable ramps up production of FlexiOM materials to meet the growing demand for Ledger Stax. The established supply chain is now ready to support a range of future applications in AR/VR optics and beyond, ensuring that the volume needs of brand partners can be met.

With the world’s first mass-produced consumer product incorporating organic transistor technology now shipping, it’s clear that FlexEnable and its partners are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the display industry. The possibilities for flexible displays and optical modules are expanding, opening up a whole new world of applications and experiences. It’s an exciting time to be at the forefront of this technological revolution.
