- The new facility is equipped with a seismic isolation structure and redundant power sources, making it a vital part of Toshiba's Business Continuity Plan.
- The integration of renewable energy sources aligns with Toshiba's sustainability goals and showcases the company's commitment to innovation.
Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) celebrated a significant milestone today with the completion of a state-of-the-art wafer fabrication facility for power semiconductors and an accompanying office building at Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This achievement marks the conclusion of Phase 1 of Toshiba’s extensive investment program, and the company is now gearing up for equipment installation, aiming to commence mass production in the second half of fiscal year 2024.
Upon reaching full-scale operation, Phase 1 will boost Toshiba’s production capacity for power semiconductors, particularly MOSFETs and IGBTs, to 2.5 times that of fiscal 2021 when the investment plan was formulated. The decision to proceed with Phase 2 will be guided by market trends, ensuring that Toshiba remains nimble and responsive to evolving industry demands.
The newly constructed manufacturing building not only serves as a testament to Toshiba’s commitment to innovation but also plays a vital role in the company’s Business Continuity Plan (BCP). Equipped with a seismic isolation structure to absorb earthquake shock and redundant power sources, the facility is designed to withstand potential disruptions. Furthermore, the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar panels on the roof will enable the facility to meet its entire power requirement with clean energy, aligning with Toshiba’s sustainability goals.
Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), Toshiba aims to enhance product quality and production efficiency within the new facility. The utilization of AI technology underscores the company’s dedication to leveraging advancements to drive operational excellence.
To support its investment in manufacturing equipment, Toshiba anticipates receiving a grant from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, further solidifying its position as a key player in the semiconductor industry.
Power semiconductors play a critical role in electricity supply and control, making them indispensable components for energy-efficient electrical equipment. As the electrification of automobiles and the automation of industrial machinery continue to gain momentum, the demand for power semiconductors is expected to experience sustained growth. Toshiba has already commenced power semiconductor production on a new 300-millimeter wafer line at Kaga Toshiba Electronics’ existing facility in the second half of fiscal 2022. The addition of the new fab will enable the company to expand its production capabilities and contribute to the global effort towards carbon neutrality.
Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation, located in Nomi-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, has been a key player in the semiconductor industry since its establishment in December 1984. Led by President and Representative Director Satoshi Aida, the company boasts a workforce of 1,150 employees as of March 31, 2024. Its main product products include discrete semiconductors such as power semiconductors, small-signal devices, and optoelectronic devices.
