MSI has launched a new desktop motherboard featuring a CAMM2 connector, which supports a 128-bit DDR5 memory bus and aims to enhance the SO-DIMM form factor used in laptops by addressing limitations and reducing required space, but its adoption in both laptops and desktops remains uncertain.

  • Supports innovative DDR5 CAMM2 technology
  • Reduces required space on motherboard
  • Optimizes signal and power traces for improved performance

MSI has launched the first image of a new desktop motherboard that supports the innovative DDR5 compression attached memory module (CAMM2). This new technology aims to enhance the SO-DIMM form factor used in Laptops by addressing the limitations of high-speed signaling and capacity, while also reducing the required space. Surprisingly, the introduction of CAMM2 in a PC motherboard is unexpected, considering that PCs are not as space-constrained as laptops.

The Z790 Project Zero Plus motherboard by MSI is primarily a proof-of-concept product that showcases various new technologies and unconventional configuration options. The standout feature is the CAMM2 connector, which supports a 128-bit DDR5 memory bus. This means that a system can be fully equipped with RAM using just a single horizontally-mounted CAMM2 module. Additionally, the Zero Plus motherboard features backside power connectors for improved cable management.

CAMM2 is designed to replace traditional modules in an SO-DIMM form-factor and occupies up to 64% less space than two DDR5 SO-DIMMs. It also optimizes signal and power traces within the motherboard by ensuring identical memory trace lengths, reducing signaling penalties associated with supporting multiple SO-DIMM slots. This is particularly important for DDR5, as even desktop systems experience frequency limitations with 2 DIMM Per Channel (2DPC) configurations. CAMM2 modules are expected to simplify and enhance laptop designs to better accommodate DDR5’s limitations.

However, it remains to be seen whether CAMM2 will be widely adopted. Unlike its LPDDR5X counterpart, LPCAMM2, DDR5 CAMM2 has not garnered significant interest from laptop vendors due to the lack of new functionality introduced. On the other hand, CAMM2 in ATX desktops is relatively unexplored, which explains the emergence of experimental products like MSI’s motherboard. While space savings are less crucial for desktops, CAMM2 does reduce Z-height and keeps memory away from CPU Coolers. PC manufacturers will also consider factors such as inventory, as equipping desktop boards with CAMM2 connectors would allow them to use the same memory modules in both laptops and desktops. Additionally, the long-term question is whether CAMM2 can deliver tangible signaling benefits compared to traditional DIMMs.

MSI plans to showcase its Z790 Project Zero Plus platform at Computex, alongside memory partner Kingston. Kingston will be demonstrating its Fury Impact CAMM2 memory module, one of the first DDR5 CAMM2 modules to be announced.
