Intel Releases Official Statement on 14th and 13th Gen Instability, Urges Users to Stick with Default Settings

Intel has recently issued a follow-up statement regarding the power settings for their 14th and 13th Gen Core series processors. In our previous article, we discussed how motherboard vendors quickly released firmware updates with a new profile called ‘Intel Baseline’ in an attempt to address the reported instability issues. However, it seems that Intel does not consider these Baseline profiles to be the same as their default specifications.

The Baseline profiles give the impression that they are operating at default settings, but they still allow motherboard vendors to use their interpretations of Multi-Core Enhancement (MCE). To clarify this confusion, Intel has stated that the Baseline profiles are not recommended for use on motherboards capable of higher power delivery settings.

Instead, Intel recommends users opt for their Default Settings, which align with the specific processor’s rated specifications. These settings ensure that the advertised clock speeds are achieved without any firmware optimization that could potentially cause instability.

The Default Settings offered by Intel include a combination of thermal and power delivery features, as well as voltage and frequency curve settings that match the capabilities of the motherboard. Intel specifically advises users with 14th and 13th-Gen Core series K, KF, and KS SKUs to avoid using the Baseline profiles provided by motherboard vendors.

The key difference between the Baseline and Default Settings is that Intel prioritizes reducing the current going through the processor. Motherboard vendors often opt for an unrestricted power profile, which maximizes performance but can lead to instability and increased power consumption.

Intel also recommends matching the AC Load Line and DC Load Line to the processor’s design target for maximum stability. Additionally, they suggest activating certain features like CEP, eTVB, C-states, TVB, and TVB Voltage Optimizations on the Extreme profile to ensure consistent performance.

While motherboard vendors may want to showcase their capabilities through firmware updates, Intel emphasizes the importance of operating at Default settings out of the box. There seems to be a lack of communication between Intel and its partners regarding this issue, which has led to confusion among consumers.

In conclusion, Intel advises users to implement the highest power delivery profile compatible with their motherboard’s specifications and design. Despite what motherboard vendors have offered so far, Intel’s recommendations should not be interpreted differently.
