- First LPDDR5X DRAM in the world, setting a new standard in the market
- Smallest chip size among existing LPDDRs, showcasing Samsung's technological leadership
- Specialized power-saving technologies for improved power efficiency, leading to longer battery life and lower energy usage
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced memory technology, has made a significant breakthrough in the industry with the development of the world’s first LPDDR5X DRAM. This memory solution boasts an impressive performance of up to 10.7 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), setting a new standard in the market.
By leveraging their 12nm-class process technology, Samsung has managed to achieve the smallest chip size among existing LPDDRs. This accomplishment solidifies their position as a technological frontrunner in the low-power DRAM market.
YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, highlighted the expanding applications for LPDDR DRAM. While it has traditionally been used in mobile devices, the demand for low-power, high-performance memory is now extending to other areas such as PCs, accelerators, servers, and automobiles.
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) applications, on-device AI has become increasingly important. This approach allows for direct processing on devices, necessitating low-power, high-performance LPDDR memory. Samsung’s 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X not only improves performance by over 25% and capacity by over 30% compared to the previous generation but also offers a single package capacity of up to 32-gigabytes (GB). These enhancements make it an ideal solution for the on-device AI era, where high-performance, high-capacity, and low-power memory are crucial.
The LPDDR5X incorporates specialized power-saving technologies that optimize power variation based on workload and extend energy-saving periods through expanded low-power mode intervals. These advancements improve power efficiency by 25% compared to the previous generation. This translates into longer battery life for mobile devices and lower energy usage for servers, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) when processing data.
Mass production of the 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X is set to commence in the second half of the year, following verification with mobile application processor (AP) and mobile device providers. Samsung’s commitment to innovation and collaboration with customers ensures that optimized products will continue to be delivered for the upcoming on-device AI era.
