Samsung Electronics has officially begun mass production of its 9th generation V-NAND memory, marking another milestone in the company’s dominance in the storage market. The new 3D TLC NAND memory, based on Samsung’s latest NAND tech, offers a 1 Tb capacity using a triple-level cell (TLC) architecture and boasts impressive data transfer rates of up to 3.2 GT/s.
While Samsung has not disclosed the exact number of layers in their 9th gen V-NAND, industry insiders speculate that it could be around 290 layers, surpassing its competitors. What Samsung has confirmed is that this new generation offers a significant 50% improvement in bit density compared to its predecessor, thanks to advancements in cell size miniaturization and enhanced memory cell technologies.
One interesting detail revealed in Samsung’s announcement is the company’s use of string stacking, referred to as their “double-stack structure.” While it is believed that Samsung employed this technique in their 8th gen NAND as well, this is the first time they have publicly acknowledged it. String stacking will play a crucial role in future NAND development as manufacturers strive to add more layers to their dies.
Another noteworthy technological enhancement in the 9th gen V-NAND is Samsung’s advanced ‘channel hole etching’ technology, which enables efficient drilling through multiple layers.
