Pimax, a leading player in the Virtual Reality (VR) industry, made waves at its Frontier 2024 event on YouTube this week by unveiling two new high-end VR headsets. The Crystal Super, their ultra-high-end offering, boasts an impressive 29.5 million pixels and the world’s first interchangeable optical engine. This innovative feature allows users to switch between QLED and micro-OLED panels based on their preferences. On the other hand, the Crystal Light offers a more budget-friendly option, with the same 16.6 million pixels as the original Pimax Crystal but at a starting price of $699.

In addition to the headsets, Pimax also introduced the 60G Airlink module, which utilizes WiGig technology to enable high-fidelity wireless PCVR. This wireless solution is a significant step forward for Pimax, as it allows for a more immersive and untethered VR experience.

The Crystal Super represents a significant advancement compared to its predecessor, the Crystal. With its increased pixel count, users can expect a larger field of view (FOV) and higher pixels per degree (PPD) simultaneously. The choice of displays is crucial in providing an optimal user experience, and Pimax understands this. By offering both QLED and micro-OLED panels, users have the flexibility to select the display that suits their needs or even opt for both, thanks to Pimax’s innovative replaceable optical engine system.

The Crystal Super starts at $1799 (excluding VAT) and will be available for shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the Crystal Light is a streamlined version of the Pimax Crystal, focusing on essential features for PCVR while reducing costs and weight by 30%. This allows Pimax to offer the Crystal Light at an attractive starting price of $699, delivering excellent value for its category. Pre-orders for the Crystal Light are currently open, with shipping scheduled for May.

Pimax also reassured its customers that they remain committed to evolving the Pimax Crystal, which was initially designed as a high-end wireless PCVR headset. This commitment necessitates the use of the XR2 chip and battery, which have been integral components of the Crystal from the beginning. To complete the wireless solution, Pimax introduced the 60G Airlink, a separate hardware module that leverages Wigig technology to provide significantly higher bandwidth compared to conventional WiFi. The 60G Airlink will be priced at $299 and is expected to ship later this year.
