Funcom, the game developer, has just launched an exciting new trailer and featurette for their upcoming game, Dune: Awakening. This exclusive sneak peek was revealed during the premiere episode of Dune: Awakening Direct, a new showcase series hosted by the esteemed Soe Gschwind. In this fifteen-minute show, viewers were treated to breathtaking footage of the open-world survival MMO set in the treacherous landscapes of the iconic Dune universe.
Since its initial announcement in 2022, Funcom has been tight-lipped about the details surrounding Dune: Awakening. However, with the recent release of Dune: Part 2, the developers have finally decided to peel back the curtain and reveal what lies beneath the sandy surface. In a captivating featurette titled “Creating Worlds: From Book to Film to Game,” Funcom takes us on an exhilarating journey deep into the heart of Arrakis. This behind-the-scenes look includes never-before-seen footage from the game and features interviews with Greig Fraser, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer of Villeneuve’s Dune Part 1 and 2, as well as Funcom’s Creative Director, Joel Bylos. Together, they shed light on the creative synergy between Dune: Awakening and the recent film adaptations, providing a glimpse into the process of bringing the ultimate Dune fantasy to life.
Following the awe-inspiring “Creating Worlds” featurette, Funcom dropped the Survive Arrakis Trailer, which bursts forth from the sand with colossal sandworms and majestic ornithopters. Players will be challenged to gather resources and construct their own bases in their preferred style, navigate the perilous deserts using a variety of vehicles, and master deadly techniques and abilities from the Great Schools of the Imperium. As they progress, they will rise from mere survival to become dominant forces on Arrakis. The trailer showcases the immense scale and freedom of a living, breathing Arrakis, capturing the essence of Dune: Awakening’s unique blend of gritty survival gameplay and expansive multiplayer interactions. This ambitious open-world survival MMO is more akin to a sandbox than a theme park, placing a strong emphasis on player freedom and the emergence of unexpected moments as they collide with the experiences of other players.
During the “Creating Worlds” featurette, Joel Bylos, the Creative Director at Funcom, eloquently summarized the essence of Dune: Awakening, stating, “Funcom has been on a long journey, creating multiplayer worlds where players can live out their dreams and fantasies. We were there at the beginning of massively multiplayer online games, and we’ve been there at the forefront of survival open-world crafting games. Dune: Awakening represents the culmination of these legacies, propelling us into the future. It embodies what Funcom stands for as a company and showcases our ability to deliver immersive experiences.”
This tantalizing glimpse into the world of Dune: Awakening was just the beginning, as more episodes of Dune: Awakening Direct are set to follow. These forthcoming showcases will delve deeper into gameplay mechanics, feature additional interviews with the development team, and unveil even more exciting content. Dune: Awakening is slated to launch on PC, Playstation 5, and XBOX Series X|S. Players can already sign up for the Beta on the official website, www.duneawakening.com, and add the game to their Steam wishlist in anticipation of its release.
