Asus has updated its UEFI BIOS for Intel 600/700-series motherboards, enabling support for 64 GB DIMMS and up to 256 GB of DDR5 memory, optimizing the performance of 12th, 13th, and 14th Generation Core processors.
- Increased memory support for Intel 600/700-series motherboards
- Compatibility with up to 256 GB of DDR5 memory
- Built-in compatibility for 64 GB DIMMs on AM5 motherboards
ASUS has recently launched updated versions of UEFI BIOS for their Intel 600/700-series motherboards, bringing support for 64 GB DIMMs and enabling compatibility with up to 256 GB of DDR5 memory. This means that Asus’s latest platforms for Intel’s 12th, 13th, and 14th Generation Core processors can now handle significantly larger memory capacities.
To take advantage of this increased memory support, users will need to download the latest UEFI BIOS update from Asus’s website. The list of compatible motherboards includes 75 models with an LGA-1700 socket, featuring various Intel chipsets such as Z790, H770, B760, Z690, W680, and Q670. However, it’s worth noting that this update only covers a fraction of Asus’s extensive lineup of LGA-1700 motherboards, which consists of nearly 200 different models.
It’s important to mention that high-capacity DIMMs, like 32 GB, 48 GB, and 64 GB modules, often do not offer the same clock speeds as their lower-capacity counterparts. This means that equipping an Intel system with 256 GB of memory may result in a reduction in peak memory bandwidth, in addition to the typical frequency penalty associated with DDR5’s 2 DIMM Per Channel (2DPC) configuration. Currently, the fastest 48 GB modules available from Corsair and G.SKILL top out at 6600 MT/s and 6800 MT/s respectively, with no Intel XMP 3.0-compatible 64 GB DDR5 modules from these manufacturers.
The primary target market for these high-capacity UDIMMs is expected to be content creators, data scientists, and other professionals who require a substantial amount of RAM for their workloads. For most users, however, 16 GB and 32 GB DIMMs are likely to remain the optimal choice for the LGA-1700 platform.
In addition to the Intel boards, Asus has also reaffirmed support for 64 GB DIMMs on their AM5 motherboards. Unlike the Intel counterparts, these motherboards already have built-in compatibility for 64 GB DIMMs, eliminating the need for a BIOS update.
Overall, Asus’s latest UEFI BIOS update brings expanded memory capabilities to their Intel 600/700-series motherboards, allowing users to take advantage of larger DDR5 memory capacities. While this update covers a limited number of models, it is a step towards accommodating the growing demand for high-capacity memory in various professional applications.
