Apricorn, the manufacturer of hardware-encrypted USB data storage devices, has just launched its latest innovation: a 24 TB version of the Aegis Padlock DT and Padlock DT FIPS Desktop Drives. This release solidifies Apricorn’s position as an industry leader, as it becomes the first company to bring a 24 TB encrypted drive to market. With this new offering, Apricorn aims to cater to industries such as healthcare, financial services, education, and government, providing them with high performance and massive storage capacity while ensuring the utmost security for users’ data. It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Apricorn has introduced the industry’s largest capacity hardware encrypted USB drive, having previously released 20 TB and 22 TB versions.
The significance of this release is further underscored by recent events. Microsoft recently disclosed that a nation-state attack it had identified in January was still not fully contained. As Microsoft plays a critical role in various aspects of our workflow, offline data encryption and storage can add an extra layer of protection and resilience against potential future attacks that may arise from breaches of this nature. Kurt Markley, the U.S. Managing Director at Apricorn, emphasized the importance of offline data encryption, stating that “The Aegis Padlock DT line is an ideal way for large organizations to protect vast amounts of data at rest in a highly secure and economic way.”
Both the Padlock DT and Padlock DT FIPS Desktop Drives come equipped with AegisWare, Apricorn’s proprietary firmware and feature set exclusive to their Aegis Secure Drives and Secure Keys. As with Apricorn’s other secure drives, users enter passwords and commands through the device’s onboard keypad. Authentication and encryption processes occur solely within the device itself, without involving any software or sharing critical security parameters with the host computer. Furthermore, all drives boast military-grade 256-bit AES XTS encryption, ensuring firmware cannot be updated or modified, thus safeguarding against malware and guaranteeing that data remains accessible only to the user.
In today’s landscape, organizations across both public and private sectors face the twin challenges of accumulating ever-growing amounts of data and grappling with increased rates of breach due to ransomware and other cyber threats. Consequently, it is more vital than ever to establish a secure backup and resiliency program that includes offline data encryption. Markley reiterated the value of the Aegis Padlock DT, stating that “Apricorn is the only vendor to offer a hardware-encrypted 24 TB option, making it easier than ever for our customers to store staggering amounts of data securely.”
The Aegis Padlock DT and Aegis Padlock DT FIPS Desktop Drives stand out in their class with the largest encrypted external USB storage capacity. The Padlock DT series offers 11 different capacities, ranging from 2 TB to the new 24 TB option, all fully hardware-based and featuring 256-bit AES XTS encryption. These drives boast on-board keypad PIN authentication and ultra-fast USB 3.2 (3.0) data transfer speeds. Data is encrypted on the fly as it is written to the drive, and both the PINs and data remain encrypted when the drives are at rest.
Apricorn’s devices provide a simple and secure solution for transporting sensitive data outside the firewall or storing it offline. They also assist companies in regulated industries in adhering to compliance regulations in sectors such as finance, government, power & energy, legal, and healthcare. Technology Explained
FIPS: The Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) encryption standard encompasses a set of specifications and guidelines established by the U.S. government to ensure the security and interoperability of cryptographic algorithms and protocols. These standards are crucial for protecting sensitive information and facilitating secure communication across various systems and organizations. FIPS-approved algorithms, such as AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman), and SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm), undergo rigorous evaluation and testing to meet stringent security requirements, providing a foundation for secure data handling and transmission in both government and non-government sectors.
