Samsung Electronics has announced the sampling of a 256GB SD Express microSD card and the mass production of a 1TB UHS-1 microSD card, providing powerful and high-capacity solutions for mobile computing and on-device AI applications.
- Industry-first SD Express microSD card with maximum speeds of up to 800MB/s
- 1TB UHS-1 microSD card with 8 layers of Samsung's 8th generation 1-terabit V-NAND
- Rigorous testing and reliable usage in challenging environments
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced memory technology, has announced the sampling of its 256GB SD Express microSD card and the start of mass production for its 1TB UHS-1 microSD card. These next-generation microSD cards are aimed at meeting the growing demands of mobile computing and on-device AI applications.
“With our two new microSD cards, Samsung has provided effective solutions to address the growing demands of mobile computing and on-device AI,” said Hangu Sohn, Vice President of the Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics. “Despite their tiny size, these memory cards deliver powerful SSD-like performance and capacity to help users get more out of demanding modern and future applications.”
The industry-first SD Express microSD card from Samsung offers maximum speeds of up to 800MB/s, thanks to its low-power design and firmware technology optimized for high-performance and thermal management. This collaboration with a customer resulted in a custom product that delivers performance equivalent to SSDs in a small form factor. Compared to traditional UHS-1 memory cards, the sequential read speed of Samsung’s SD Express microSD card is more than four times faster, allowing for improved computing experiences in various applications.
In addition to the SD Express microSD card, Samsung has also introduced a 1TB UHS-1 microSD card. This high-capacity card stacks eight layers of Samsung’s 8th generation 1-terabit (Tb) V-NAND within a microSD form factor, making it possible to achieve the storage capacity previously only seen in SSDs. The 1TB microSD card has undergone rigorous testing and offers reliable usage even in challenging environments, with features such as water protection, extreme temperature resistance, drop-proof design, wear-out protection, as well as X-ray and magnetic protection.
The 256GB SD Express microSD card will be available for purchase later this year, while the 1TB UHS-1 microSD card is set to launch in the third quarter of this year. With these new memory solutions, Samsung aims to provide users with the performance and capacity required for tomorrow’s mobile computing and on-device AI applications.

Technology Explained
NAND: NAND technology is a type of non-volatile memory that is used in many computer applications. It is a type of flash memory that is used to store data in a non-volatile manner, meaning that the data is not lost when the power is turned off. NAND technology is used in many computer applications, such as solid-state drives, USB flash drives, digital cameras, and memory cards. It is also used in many embedded systems, such as cell phones, tablets, and other consumer electronics. NAND technology is a reliable and cost-effective way to store data, making it a popular choice for many computer applications.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
