UEFI Resizable Bar Mod: Boosting Gaming Performance on Older Platforms

ResizableBAR, a feature that gained popularity in 2020 with AMD’s Smart Access Memory technology, has now found a way to support older platforms that don’t natively support it. Thanks to the ReBarUEFI open-source project, gamers using aging systems can now enjoy an average 6% performance boost.

Initially, ResizableBAR was an underutilized PCI Express feature present in many motherboards for years. However, it gained widespread attention when AMD introduced SAM. This prompted other GPU vendors to follow suit and implement the feature. Now, the ReBarUEFI project offers a boot-time module that replaces existing functions to enable ReBAR compatibility.

While not universally applicable, the project provides a clever workaround for activating ReBAR on platforms like the Intel Sandy Bridge from 2011. Some platforms may require enabling 4G encoding, but instructions for achieving this can be found on the project’s GitHub page.

Once activated, ReBAR allows for the allocation of more than 256MB of system memory to be mapped to GPU memory. This allocation significantly enhances gaming performance. For example, enabling ReBAR on a Core i3-3470 CPU paired with a Radeon RX 580 GPU could result in up to a 12% performance boost after activating a 2GB BAR size.

It’s important to exercise caution when using mods, especially when tinkering with BIOS settings. But for those looking to breathe new life into their older systems and squeeze out some extra gaming performance, the UEFI Resizable Bar Mod could be a game-changer.
