Intel’s 15th Gen Core i7-15700K: 20 Cores Launched, AVX-512 and Hyper-Threading Absent
Last week, Intel’s Arrow Lake-S flagship CPU was leaked, and now a second 15th Gen sample has been discovered. InstLatX64 has provided us with details of a 20-core CPU, which is likely to include 8P and 12 E-Cores. If these rumors are accurate, this processor will be the successor to the Core i7-14700k, the standout chip from Intel’s 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh. However, it is worth noting that this new CPU lacks hyper-threading, AVX512, or any alternative to them.
The alleged Core i7-15700K boasts 20 cores and 20 threads, with a base clock of 2.3GHz. While the base clock speed may not hold much significance on its own, it is interesting to compare it to the supposed Core i9-15900K, which is said to feature 24 cores (8P + 16E) and a base clock of 3GHz. One disappointing aspect of the Core i7-15700K is the absence of AVX512 support. AMD has already embraced 512-bit instructions on its Ryzen 7000 processors, implementing them on Zen 4 using a different approach from Intel’s.
AMD utilizes a 256-bit data path and double the number of registers to execute “most 512-bit ops” over two consecutive cycles. This approach not only improves power efficiency but also eliminates the need for significant architectural changes. On the other hand, Intel plans to integrate AVX512 support into its P and E-cores as part of the AVX10 instruction set. Unfortunately, it seems that Arrow Lake will not benefit from AVX10 or 512-bit instructions.
While the absence of hyper-threading, AVX512, and alternative instructions may be disappointing to some, it is important to consider the overall performance and capabilities of Intel’s 15th Gen Arrow Lake family. With 20 cores and 20 threads, the Core i7-15700K is poised to deliver impressive processing power.
