Razer, the lifestyle brand for gamers, is making strides in its commitment to sustainability by incorporating recycled materials into its new line of PC products launching in 2024 and beyond. This initiative will initially focus on Razer’s core PC peripherals, including mice, keyboards, and headsets, with plans to expand to other product categories in the future. The products featuring recycled materials will be available in Razer’s signature black base colorway.
Razer has already been experimenting with recycled materials in its product manufacturing, with two products currently available. The Razer DeathAdder V2 X HyperSpeed gaming mouse contains 40% recycled materials, while the Razer Ornata V3 ergonomic clicky gaming keyboard includes at least 20% recycled materials. Both products have met the stringent criteria to achieve the UL 2809 ECOLOGO label, an independently verified ecolabel certification from UL Solutions, a leading testing, inspection, and certification company. Building on the success of these integrations, Razer aims to expand the use of recycled materials across its entire range of core PC peripherals starting from 2024.
Kenneth Ng, Sustainability Lead at Razer, emphasized the importance of addressing the environmental impact of plastics in gaming products. He stated, “Today’s gamers want innovation and performance but are acutely aware of the impact plastics have on the world.” By incorporating recycled materials and working towards making products more recyclable, Razer is actively striving to improve the circularity of gaming products and reduce their environmental footprint.
In addition to using recycled materials, Razer is also exploring the recyclability of its products to minimize their environmental impact at the end of their lifecycle. This approach allows Razer to reduce the need for virgin materials in manufacturing and incorporate circularity into product design, further minimizing environmental harm.
Razer has also achieved another significant milestone by becoming the first consumer electronics brand to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification from UL Solutions. The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro and Razer Basilisk Ultimate are the world’s first consumer electronics products to be certified with an EPD. This certification provides consumers with valuable information about the carbon footprint, water usage, and resource consumption of each product, displayed on the packaging. By obtaining EPD certification, Razer demonstrates its commitment to transparency and allows gamers to make informed, environmentally friendly choices.
Razer’s sustainability efforts have been ongoing since the launch of its ten-year sustainability plan, #GoGreenWithRazer, in 2021. The company has achieved various milestones, including adopting the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) reporting framework, aligning its decarbonization strategy with Science Based Targets (SBT), and powering all corporate offices with 100% renewable energy sources ahead of schedule. Razer has also taken a stand against deep-sea mining of minerals, making it the first consumer electronic brand to do so. With its latest sustainability announcements at CES, Razer continues to prioritize creating a safe and sustainable gaming environment for all.
