Welcome, fellow gamers, to the exciting realm of Overwatch in 2024! As we embark on this new year, I wanted to take a moment to share our vision for the game and what lies ahead. This Director’s Take is just the beginning of a series where we delve into the core values that drive our development process and outline the specific enhancements and additions we have in store.
One of our primary goals is to elevate Overwatch’s individual and team-focused gameplay to better cater to our dedicated player base. When we envision the future of Overwatch, we don’t simply see a game with a few new heroes and maps tacked on. We see a game that constantly evolves with innovative systems and features that truly serve our players. Some of these features may exist outside of the actual matches, like a map voting system, while others may revamp the way players interact with the game, such as our Competitive System. Additionally, we aim to make modifications to the moment-to-moment gameplay itself.
In this Director’s Take, I want to focus on these in-match changes. However, rest assured that future discussions will cover other aspects like our Competitive System, hero balance, economy, as well as exciting events and potential new systems.
Let’s dive into Overwatch gameplay. As we all know, Overwatch is a unique team-based, hero-driven multiplayer shooter that thrives on cooperative teamwork. The magic of the game is truly felt when players synergize their hero abilities and execute strategies together. However, when players decide to go solo, the experience can quickly turn frustrating. The reliance on teammates can be both a blessing and a curse.
Our mission is to address this issue by reevaluating the game through the lens of teamwork. We want to make it easier for players to work together effectively while also reducing the pain when teamwork falls short. We’ve already implemented some features like the Ping system and Spawn Together system, which encourage team play. The latter, in particular, will receive further tuning in Season 9 to enhance its impact. But we’re not stopping there; we’re exploring additional features such as Party Frames, which are on-screen indicators of player health, and potential improvements to backfilling, scoreboards, and spawn camping mitigation. We’ve even considered an ally-only mini-map, although its implementation is uncertain. These discussions and developments demonstrate our commitment to fostering teamwork and improving the overall Overwatch experience.
However, we understand that even with these enhancements, there will still be instances where teams struggle to work cohesively. We aim to alleviate some of this frustration by implementing significant gameplay and balance changes in Season 9. These changes will primarily focus on reducing damage spikes during combat. While I won’t delve into all the details here, as we have a dedicated post coming soon, I’d like to highlight one aspect. In Season 9, both Tank and Damage heroes will receive a modified version of the Support self-healing passive. This adjustment empowers non-Support players to sustain themselves better and eases the pressure on Support players to constantly keep everyone alive. It’s a delicate balance between team dynamics and individual hero power, and we continuously evaluate and refine this balance to ensure Overwatch remains a strategic team-based game.
Furthermore, we are actively exploring new avenues for enhancing the core gameplay experience. Our recent event, Quicker Play, introduced rule modifications to the Quick Play mode, resulting in faster-paced matches with shorter respawn times and quicker payload and capture times. Through this experiment, we aim to gauge the impact on player psychology. Will reduced wait times for respawning lessen frustration when eliminated by opponents? Will shorter matches soften the blow of defeat? Additionally, this event offers potential benefits like improved matchmaking speed and faster challenge completion.
