AMD, the semiconductor company, made an exciting announcement today regarding its plans for CES 2024. The company will be showcasing its latest automotive innovations and expanding its product portfolio with the introduction of two devices: the Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoC and the Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processor. These devices demonstrate AMD’s leadership in automotive technology and cater to various key segments within the automotive industry, including infotainment, advanced driver safety, and autonomous driving.
The Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoCs are equipped with an advanced AI Engine, allowing them to be optimized for a wide range of next-generation automotive systems and applications. These include forward cameras, in-cabin monitoring, LiDAR, 4D radar, surround-view, automated parking, and autonomous driving. Notably, the Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoCs are the first AMD 7 nm devices to be auto-qualified, offering hardened IP and enhanced security for automotive applications where safety is of utmost importance.
On the other hand, the Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processors power the next-generation automotive digital cockpit, from the infotainment console to the digital cluster and passenger displays. This expansion of the Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series brings the first x86 auto-qualified processor family that provides consumers with a PC-like experience they have come to expect from home entertainment. Now, they can enjoy this same experience in their vehicles while on the move.
Salil Raje, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group at AMD, expressed excitement about the company’s expanding automotive portfolio and its potential to serve the rapidly growing market. He also highlighted the synergy between AMD and Xilinx since their acquisition almost two years ago.
The Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoCs with AI Engines offer several advantages for AI compute, vision, and signal processing. They can handle large amounts of data for AI inference and can be used in edge sensors like LiDARs, radars, and cameras, as well as in centralized domain controllers. These AI Engines are capable of handling different types of AI models, such as classification and feature tracking. The portfolio of Versal AI Edge XA devices ranges from 20k LUTs to 521k LUTs, and from 5 TOPs to 171 TOPs. Designers can easily port their designs across this product portfolio using the same tools, ecosystem, and safety certifications.
The Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoCs not only accelerate high-performing AI compute applications but also provide safety and security features to advance automotive designs. The first devices will be released in early 2024, with further releases planned later in the year.
James Hodgson, Research Director at ABI Research, emphasized the importance of powerful and efficient AI compute platforms for autonomous vehicle applications. He noted that the number of highly automated vehicles shipping each year is projected to grow significantly, indicating a promising growth opportunity for suppliers of heterogeneous SoCs with robust AI compute capabilities like the AMD Versal AI Edge XA.
In terms of enhancing in-vehicle experiences, AMD recognizes the rising expectations influenced by advances in consumer electronics. Factors such as entertainment, connectivity, workplace on wheels, and safety are becoming increasingly important to consumers. To address these demands, AMD has introduced the new Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processor. This auto-grade processor enables carmakers to deliver impressive performance and multitasking capabilities for infotainment and in-vehicle experience systems, ensuring passengers can stay connected while on the go.
The AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processor is built on innovative 7 nm process technology and features ‘Zen 2’ cores and high-performance AMD Radeon Vega 7 graphics. This processor delivers high-definition graphics, enhanced security features, and support for automotive software enablement through hypervisors. It also supports Automotive Grade Linux and Android Automotive.
Peter Cirino, Chief Operating Officer of ECARX, praised the AMD Ryzen Embedded processors for their role in powering ECARX automotive solutions. He expressed excitement about the Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processor and its potential to expand the capabilities of their next-generation digital cockpit solutions for software-defined vehicles in 2024 and beyond.
At CES 2024, AMD will be showcasing its wide range of automotive solutions in collaboration with its ecosystem partners. The demonstrations will include various aspects such as in-vehicle experience, AI optimized real-time multi-sensor object detection, automated parking, display expansion, LiDAR, 3D surround view, driver monitoring, and more.
