- Dell Technologies generated strong cash flow from operations of $2.2 billion for the quarter
- Recurring revenue stood at $5.6 billion, marking a 4% increase year-over-year
- Introduced new products within its Dell Generative AI Solutions portfolio
Dell Technologies recently released its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2024, and the numbers are a mixed bag. While the company saw a decline in revenue, it also demonstrated its ability to generate strong cash flow and profitability.
In terms of revenue, Dell reported $22.3 billion for the quarter, which is a 10% decrease compared to the same period last year. This dip in revenue resulted in operating income of $1.5 billion and non-GAAP operating income of $2 billion, down 16% and 17% year-over-year, respectively. Diluted earnings per share came in at $1.36, with non-GAAP diluted earnings per share at $1.88.
Despite the decline in revenue, Dell showcased its financial stability with cash flow from operations reaching $2.2 billion for the quarter. This was driven by the company’s profitability and strong working capital performance. Over the past year, Dell has generated an impressive $9.9 billion in cash flow from operations.
Looking at the company’s performance obligations, Dell ended the quarter with $39 billion in remaining performance obligations. Recurring revenue stood at $5.6 billion, marking a 4% increase year-over-year. Deferred revenue also saw growth, reaching $29.1 billion, a 7% increase primarily attributed to software and hardware maintenance agreements. Dell’s cash and investment balance amounted to $9.9 billion.
Yvonne McGill, Chief Financial Officer of Dell Technologies, expressed satisfaction with the company’s ability to generate strong cash flow through profitability and working capital efficiency. McGill stated, “Our long-term financial framework and capital allocation plan continue to deliver results.”
Breaking down Dell’s business segments, the Infrastructure Solutions Group reported third-quarter revenue of $8.5 billion, remaining flat sequentially and decreasing by 12% year-over-year. The Servers and Networking division contributed $4.7 billion in revenue, experiencing a 9% sequential growth driven by AI-optimized servers. Storage revenue reached $3.8 billion, down 8% sequentially, but with notable demand in unstructured data solutions and data protection. The operating income for this group was $1.1 billion.
Meanwhile, the Client Solutions Group recorded third-quarter revenue of $12.3 billion, down 11% year-over-year and 5% sequentially. Commercial client revenue accounted for $9.8 billion, while Consumer revenue reached $2.4 billion. The operating income for this segment was $925 million.
Jeff Clarke, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Dell Technologies, emphasized the company’s commitment to extending its leadership positions and capitalizing on new opportunities for growth. Clarke stated, “Our servers and networking business was up 9% sequentially fueled by customer interest in generative AI.”
Dell also showcased its dedication to expanding its portfolio to meet customer needs across various environments. The company introduced new products within its Dell Generative AI Solutions portfolio, designed to simplify GenAI implementations with high-performing IT infrastructure, multicloud access, and professional services.
One of the notable additions is the ObjectScale XF960, an all-flash, scale-out appliance for GenAI and real-time analytics. This solution utilizes Dell’s software-defined object storage software and can run on Linux and Red Hat Open Shift on PowerEdge servers.
Dell’s collaborations with Meta and Hugging Face further enhance its GenAI products. These partnerships allow customers to deploy Meta’s Llama 2 models on premises using Dell’s GenAI portfolio of IT infrastructure, client devices, and professional services. Additionally, the collaboration with Hugging Face enables enterprises to create, fine-tune, and implement their own open-source GenAI models with the support of the Hugging Face community on Dell infrastructure products and services.
In terms of cloud platforms, Dell introduced the APEX Cloud Platform for Microsoft Azure, which simplifies the hybrid cloud experience by facilitating the extension of Azure to data center and edge locations. The APEX Cloud Platform for Red Hat OpenShift, on the other hand, is the first fully integrated application delivery platform designed specifically for Red Hat OpenShift. It enables customers to deploy, manage, and run containers alongside virtual machines on premises.
Lastly, Dell launched its Precision 7875 Tower, the company’s most scalable and powerful AMD processor-based workstation. This workstation allows companies to develop and fine-tune complex GenAI models locally before deploying them at scale.
As Dell Technologies continues to navigate the ever-evolving tech landscape, it remains focused on leveraging its strengths and seizing new opportunities for growth. With a diverse portfolio and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Dell is poised to make significant strides in the coming year.
