The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is making significant strides in wireless charging with the upcoming release of Qi v2.0. This next-generation standard promises magnetic attachment, faster charging, higher efficiency, and greater convenience for users. The first batch of Qi2 certified mobile devices is currently undergoing certification testing, and they are expected to hit the market just in time for the holiday season.

Leading the charge is Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup, which will be among the first Qi v2.0 certified products to be released. Other major players in the industry, such as Belkin, Mophie, Anker, and Aircharge, have also pre-announced their Qi2 products. With over 100 devices currently being tested or in the certification queue, it’s clear that the industry is embracing the new standard.

Qi v2.0, also known as “chee two,” brings together the entire industry under one global standard. It consists of two profiles: the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) and an enhanced version of the existing wireless charging Extended Power Profile (EPP). The MPP, based on Apple’s MagSafe technology, features a Qi2 logo and offers magnetic attachment capabilities. On the other hand, the EPP profile, which does not include magnets, complies with the Qi v2.0 standard and will be branded with the existing Qi logo.

Fady Mishriki, Chair of the WPC’s Board of Directors, expressed excitement about the rapid adoption of Qi v2.0 by WPC members. He believes that Qi v2.0 will soon become the global standard for wireless charging due to its improved performance and interoperability. Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director for the WPC, highlighted the benefits of Qi2 chargers, including smoother and faster charging, energy efficiency, and hassle-free alignment thanks to magnetic attachment.

The wireless charging market is booming, with over one billion devices, including transmitters and receivers, expected to be sold this year. The introduction of the Qi2 profile will further expand this market by enabling wireless charging for new types of accessories that were previously incompatible.

Overall, the arrival of Qi v2.0 is set to revolutionize wireless charging by delivering enhanced user experiences and unifying the industry under a single global standard. With the holiday season just around the corner, consumers can look forward to a wide range of Qi2 certified products hitting the shelves.
