AMD’s EPYC DC Profits Surpass Intel’s Xeon Income by Triple the Margin
In the world of data centers, Intel’s Xeon processors have long been the dominant force. However, recent reports indicate that AMD’s Epyc DC processors are making significant strides in this market, surpassing Intel’s income by a staggering threefold margin.
While Intel’s Data Center revenue in Q3 2023 experienced a 10% year-over-year decline, dropping from $4.3 billion in 2022 to $3.8 billion this year, its operating income saw a misleading 151% increase. Despite this apparent improvement, it is important to note that Intel’s data center income was actually in the negative at -3% (or -$0.1 billion) in Q3 2022. In comparison, its data center income for the third quarter of 2023 was a mere 2% or $0.1 billion.
On the other hand, AMD managed to maintain its data center revenue at $1.6 billion last quarter, the same as the previous year. Although its operating margins experienced a 12% decline, dropping from 31% in 2022 to 19% this year, AMD outperformed Intel with an impressive operating income of $306 million. This figure is three times higher than what Intel achieved in its data center segment.
While Intel may be facing challenges in the data center market, it continues to thrive in the client (PC) market. The company reported a revenue of $7.9 billion in the third quarter of 2023, similar to the previous year. Moreover, its operating income witnessed a notable 26% increase, rising from $1.4 billion in Q2 2022 to $2.1 billion this year.
In contrast, AMD experienced a significant year-over-year growth of 42% in client revenue, increasing from $1 billion to $1.5 billion. However, the company’s operating margins remained slim at just 10% in the last quarter. Despite this, AMD’s operating income showed improvement, reaching $140 million or $0.14 billion, up from -$26 million the previous year. It is worth noting that AMD’s client revenue for Q3 2023 was 15 times less than Intel’s.
These recent developments highlight the shifting dynamics in the data center and client markets. While Intel continues to dominate the client market, AMD’s Epyc DC processors are gaining ground in the data center space, surpassing Intel’s income by a significant margin. As competition intensifies, it will be interesting to see how these two tech giants navigate the evolving landscape and strive for further innovation.
