PC shipments continued to decline in Q3 2023, but there is hope for recovery as inventory levels have become leaner and the potential of AI-powered PCs could boost selling prices in 2024.
- PC inventory has become leaner in recent months, reaching healthy levels across most channels.
- The PC industry is on a slow path to recovery as a device refresh cycle and end of support for Windows 10 will help drive sales in the second half of 2024 and beyond.
- Generative AI could be a watershed moment for the PC industry, offering organizations the ability to personalize user experiences on a deeper level while maintaining data privacy and sovereignty.
PC shipments continued their downward trend in the third quarter of 2023, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Global volumes declined by 7.6% year over year, with 68.2 million PCs shipped. However, there is a glimmer of hope as PC shipments have seen an increase in the past two quarters, indicating that the market may have hit its lowest point.
One positive sign is that PC inventory has become leaner in recent months, reaching healthy levels across most channels. Nevertheless, pricing remains a concern, with downward pressure expected to persist in both the consumer and business sectors. While all of the top 5 vendors experienced significant declines during the quarter, Apple’s decline was particularly notable due to unfavorable year-over-year comparisons resulting from COVID-related production halts in the previous year. On the other hand, HP’s growth can be attributed to inventory normalization.
Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, commented on the current state of the PC industry, stating, “The PC industry is on a slow path to recovery as a device refresh cycle and end of support for Windows 10 will help drive sales in the second half of 2024 and beyond. In the meantime, the PC industry will unfortunately experience more pain.” Ubrani also highlighted the supply chain’s exploration of procurement and production options outside of China as a key issue, second only to the advancement of AI within PCs.
Linn Huang, research vice president at IDC, emphasized the potential impact of generative AI on the PC industry, stating, “Generative AI could be a watershed moment for the PC industry. While specific use cases are still being developed, there is already significant interest in this category. AI-powered PCs offer organizations the ability to personalize user experiences on a deeper level while maintaining data privacy and sovereignty. With more of these devices set to launch next year, we anticipate a significant boost in overall selling prices.”
