Sony's PlayStation 5 now supports 8 TB SSDs, allowing for larger game installations and more storage space than the Xbox Series X|S consoles.

  • The Sabrent 8 TB Rocket 4 Plus drive offers impressive performance with sequential write speeds of up to 7,100 MB/s and sequential read speeds of up to 6,000 MB/s.
  • The drive is equipped with a PS5-compatible aluminum heatsink that also serves as a replacement for the drive bay's metal cover plate.
  • The PlayStation 5 now boasts an advantage over Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S consoles, as it supports 8 TB SSDs while the Xbox consoles only support proprietary drives with a maximum capacity of 2 TB.

Sony’s Playstation 5 has recently expanded its internal storage capacity, allowing for the use of larger solid-state drives (SSDs). Initially limited to 4 TB, the PS5 now supports drives up to 8 TB thanks to the 8.00 firmware update. Sabrent is among the first SSD manufacturers to offer an 8 TB drive specifically designed for the PS5.

Sabrent’s Rocket 4 Plus 8 TB SSD, based on a Phison platform, stands out as one of the fastest drives in its series. With sequential write speeds of up to 7,100 MB/s and sequential read speeds of up to 6,000 MB/s, this SSD delivers impressive performance. To ensure optimal cooling during intense usage, Sabrent has equipped the drive with a PS5-compatible aluminum heatsink that also serves as a replacement for the drive bay’s metal cover plate.

The Sabrent 8 TB Rocket 4 Plus drive (model SB-RKT4P-PSHS-8TB) is available for purchase on Amazon at a price of $1,009.99. While this may seem like a significant investment, it offers a substantial increase in storage capacity compared to the PS5’s default 825 GB. This additional space is crucial considering the growing size of modern games, such as Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which takes up over 300 GB, and Gran Turismo 7, which nears 200 GB.

With the ability to support 8 TB SSDs, the Playstation 5 now boasts an advantage over Microsoft’s XBOX Series X|S consoles. The Xbox consoles only support proprietary drives with a maximum capacity of 2 TB. It remains to be seen when an 8 TB drive will become available for the latest generation of Xbox consoles, as they currently utilize M.2-2230 SSDs enclosed in plastic cases.

Technology Explained

M.2: M.2, also known as Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a computer expansion card format that is designed to replace the outdated mSATA standard. It is thinner and longer than mSATA, which gives it a much higher data transfer rate. The M.2 format measures 22mm in width and can measure up to 110mm in length. It uses the M-key and B-key connectors to interface with PC host systems, and can connect to both SATA III and PCIe for data transfer. Due to its small size, M.2 is often used for ultra-slim laptops and netbooks, as well as in embedded SSDs for tablets and other mobile devices. It is also becoming increasingly popular in the desktop computer industry, thanks to its compactness and fast transfer speeds. This makes M.2 ideal for gaming PCs, workstations, and other demanding applications that require high levels of data throughput.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
