As Call of Duty approaches its 20th anniversary, fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to. With the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, players will be treated to modernized versions of 16 iconic multiplayer maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Sledgehammer Games’ Art Director Matt Abbott and Design Director Zach Hodson recently shared some insights into the process of faithfully recreating these beloved maps.

According to Matt, the team was thrilled to take on the challenge of modernizing these classic maps. Each designer at the studio was assigned a specific map to bring back to life in Modern Warfare III. The goal was to create the best versions of these maps that fans have ever played.

Zach emphasized the importance of finding a balance between the movement and gunplay mechanics of older games and the newer ones. The team wanted to marry the best aspects of both to create a fresh yet familiar experience for players.

While the overall layout and gameplay flow of the maps remain faithful to the originals, there have been some visual updates and improvements. Thanks to advancements in game engine technology, the maps now boast better lighting, enhanced scenic details, and improved enemy visibility. Buildings and other elements may have different colors or materials, giving them a fresh look while still retaining their core design.

One notable change is the addition of new models for the vehicles found throughout the maps. These small details contribute to the overall modernization of the experience. Additionally, advancements in animation and movement techniques allow players to navigate the maps with more agility and confidence.

The team at Sledgehammer Games has put a lot of thought into preserving the authenticity and core design of each map while incorporating modern updates. They want players to feel a sense of nostalgia while also enjoying a fresh multiplayer experience.

In addition to the 16 modernized maps, Modern Warfare III will also feature four brand-new Battle Maps for Ground War and Invasion game modes. The game will continue to receive free post-launch content, including new 6v6 maps and additional multiplayer modes in future seasons.

Fans will have the opportunity to experience the modernized Modern Warfare 2 maps for themselves on October 5 during the Call of Duty: Next franchise showcase. It’s an exciting time for Call of Duty veterans and newcomers alike as they prepare to dive into the next chapter of this iconic franchise.
