Today, NVIDIA and seven other important companies announced their support for voluntary commitments developed by the Biden Administration to ensure the safety, security, and trustworthiness of advanced AI systems, with NVIDIA's chief scientist, Bill Dally, testifying before a U.S. Senate subcommittee to provide input on potential legislation regarding generative AI.

nVidia, the technology company, made a significant announcement today at the White House. The company revealed its support for voluntary commitments developed by the Biden Administration, aimed at ensuring the safety, security, and trustworthiness of advanced AI systems. This news coincided with NVIDIA’s chief scientist, Bill Dally, testifying before a U.S. Senate subcommittee to provide input on potential legislation regarding generative AI.

Joining forces with NVIDIA in supporting these commitments are seven other important companies, including Adobe, IBM, Palantir, and Salesforce. These commitments, which were released by the Biden-Harris administration in July with the backing of Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, are designed to establish common standards and best practices for the safety of generative AI systems until official regulations are put in place.

The commitments encompass various aspects, such as testing the safety and capabilities of AI products before deployment, safeguarding AI models against cyber and insider threats, and utilizing AI to tackle society’s most pressing challenges, ranging from cancer research to climate change mitigation.

During his testimony before the Senate subcommittee, Dally emphasized the importance of striking a balance between encouraging innovation in AI and ensuring responsible deployment of AI models. This hearing, titled “Oversight of AI: Rules for Artificial Intelligence,” is part of a global effort by policymakers to identify and address potential risks associated with generative AI.

Dally shared the witness table with Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president and vice chair, as well as leaders from Anthropic, IBM, OpenAI, and esteemed academic Yoshua Bengio. Dally took the opportunity to provide a brief overview of NVIDIA’s pivotal role in the evolution of AI over the past two decades.

He highlighted how NVIDIA revolutionized the field by inventing the GPU (graphics processing unit) in 1999 and subsequently expanding its application to parallel processing through the development of the CUDA programming software in 2006. This breakthrough enabled developers in various scientific and technical computing domains to significantly advance their work.

Furthermore, researchers discovered that GPUs were exceptionally well-suited for AI’s neural networks due to their capacity for massive parallel processing. In 2012, the AlexNet model, trained on two NVIDIA GPUs, demonstrated human-like capabilities in image recognition, sparking a decade of rapid advancements in AI powered by GPUs. These advancements have led to the creation of widely used generative AI models like ChatGPT.

Dally emphasized the transformative potential of accelerated computing and generative AI across industries, as well as their ability to address global challenges and benefit society as a whole. In his written testimony, he provided examples of how AI is empowering professionals in fields such as business, healthcare, and climate science to perform their jobs more effectively.

However, Dally acknowledged that like any technology, AI products and services come with inherent risks and are subject to existing laws and regulations aimed at mitigating those risks. He emphasized the role of industry in deploying AI responsibly, with developers setting limits for AI models during training and defining their outputs.

NVIDIA has taken steps to ensure responsible AI deployment, such as releasing open-source software called NeMo Guardrails in April. This software helps guide generative AI applications in producing accurate, appropriate, and secure text responses. Additionally, NVIDIA maintains internal risk-management guidelines for AI models.

Dally urged the subcommittee to strike a balance between thoughtful regulation and fostering innovation within the global AI developer community, which includes thousands of startups, researchers, and enterprises. He emphasized the importance of widely available AI tools to ensure a level playing field for all.

During the questioning session, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) asked Dally about NVIDIA’s partnership with Getty Images. Dally explained that the collaboration aimed to respect intellectual property rights by training large language models using a service called Picasso, ensuring that original content providers receive appropriate compensation.
