Innovative “12V-2×6” GPU Connector Endures Rigorous 640W Power Test, Even When Partially Inserted

  • The connector temperature remained below 46.5°C, even when subjected to high power settings.
  • The cable's temperature only reached a modest 41°C when not fully inserted.
  • The sense pins responsible for negotiating higher power usage should restrict the delivery of 600+W of power when not securely connected.

Linewell, the manufacturer behind power cables for brands like ASUS, recently underwent testing for their new 12V-2×6 cable design. HardwareBusters had the opportunity to witness these tests firsthand. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the cable’s performance when not fully inserted.

During the extended-duration test, the connector temperature remained below 46.5°C, even when subjected to high power settings. But what caught our attention was when the cable was intentionally not fully inserted and tested again. Despite receiving a whopping 55 Amps of power and continuously delivering over 640W, the cable’s temperature only reached a modest 41°C. This result indicates that the cable is far from melting under such conditions.

It’s worth noting that the new cable design should inherently prevent such situations from occurring in the first place. The sense pins responsible for negotiating higher power usage should restrict the delivery of 600+W of power when not securely connected. However, this test aimed to demonstrate that the new power pins are not only more conductive but also less prone to generating excessive heat. It’s important to mention that deliberately shorting the sense pins was done solely for this test and may not always be the case with a not fully seated cable.

Additionally, even under conditions of excessive bending in all directions, the cable’s temperature remained consistent. However, it remains uncertain whether power supply companies will revise their recommendations regarding bending distance.

The updated 12V-2×6 cable represents a significant advancement in graphics card power delivery and has become the standard for all new RTX 40 cards shipped to customers. Power supplies are also adapting to this new standard. While we hope to avoid any reports of these new cables melting, it’s crucial to remember that every power cable and connector carries some risk of failure, and no design is entirely flawless.
