- Integration of generative AI into Symantec Security platform to detect, understand, and mitigate sophisticated cyber attacks.
- Bridge the cybersecurity talent gap by providing less experienced staff with assistive features.
- Optimization of security controls and removal of manual tasks to speed up implementation, policy tuning, and response times.
Symantec, a division of Broadcom Inc., has joined forces with Google Cloud to integrate generative AI (gen AI) into the Symantec Security platform. This collaboration aims to give customers a significant advantage in detecting, understanding, and mitigating sophisticated cyber attacks.
By leveraging the Google Cloud Security AI Workbench and a security-specific large language model (LLM) called Sec-PaLM 2, Symantec will enable natural language interfaces and generate more comprehensive threat analyses. This integration will empower security operations center (SoC) analysts of all levels to better comprehend threats and respond more efficiently, ultimately enhancing security and SOC productivity.
Adam Bromwich, CTO and Head of Engineering at Symantec Enterprise Division, Broadcom, emphasized Symantec’s expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning for critical security use cases. He expressed excitement about the partnership with Google Cloud, stating that it will allow customers to be more productive and effective. Bromwich sees this collaboration as just the beginning of a fruitful relationship that will bring the benefits of AI to the broader security ecosystem.
The collaboration between Symantec and Google Cloud brings together two industry leaders to address the growing cybersecurity talent gap. As the enterprise attack surface expands and becomes more complex, companies struggle to find security analysts with deep expertise. Symantec’s products aim to bridge this skills gap by providing less experienced staff with assistive features that summarize threat information in natural language and offer user-friendly ways to operate security products.
Google Cloud has been a key partner in Broadcom’s growth strategy for several years. The successful migration of Symantec Cloud Secure Web Gateway (SWG) and Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) onto Google Cloud has allowed Broadcom to modernize its security stack and standardize service delivery processes. This has enabled the company to scale and operate more efficiently, benefiting enterprise customers.
Sunil Potti, GM and VP of Cloud Security at Google Cloud, highlighted the collaboration’s focus on delivering AI-infused security that accelerates threat detection and makes it more actionable for security analysts at all levels. Potti emphasized the optimization of security controls and the removal of manual tasks that slow down implementation, policy tuning, and response times.
The combination of Symantec’s expertise in security-targeted AI and ML and Google Cloud’s scale and gen AI models creates a powerful solution for customers protecting complex environments. As part of the partnership, Symantec has shared query language samples with Google Cloud to enhance the interaction between its Sec-PaLM 2 LLM and specific systems, resulting in improved workflows. Additionally, Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network provides deep visibility into threats, which customers can leverage more effectively with advancements in gen AI.
Frank Dickson, Group Vice President of Security & Trust at IDC, predicts that all security vendors will eventually integrate generative AI into their solutions. However, he believes that true innovators will understand how to tap into the predictive models behind generative AI to produce better security data and achieve better outcomes. Companies with rich data sets and expertise in AI/ML are worth keeping an eye on, according to Dickson.
This initial phase of gen AI adoption by Symantec requires no updates on products or processes and utilizes the company’s existing externally facing sites. Existing customers can already benefit from enhanced security features, including rapid access to descriptive threat descriptions, easy-to-understand explanations of malicious scripts and machine code actions, increased performance for identifying malicious binary files, and closed loop systems that ensure human analyst validation of all output.
