Techtesters, a media channel known for its thorough assessments, decided to explore the potential of improving the RX 7800 XT’s power efficiency through undervolting and power limiting. They settled on a 90% power limit for the Gigabyte RX 7800 XT Gaming GPU.
The comparison involved testing the card in various games with different performance demands. The results showed that the Gigabyte RX 7800 XT Gaming OC, with stock settings, consumes 40% more power than an undervolted card with a 200W power draw, while only delivering a 9% increase in performance. However, it’s worth noting that the AMD reference card requires 24% more power at stock settings. Despite this, the 9% performance boost shouldn’t be underestimated, and the reduced power consumption also leads to quieter operation and lower temperatures.
Interestingly, even with a 200W configuration, the RX 7800 XT holds its own against the RTX 4070, which consumes a similar amount of power at stock settings. This means that there’s virtually no difference between these GPUs once the RX 7800 XT is undervolted. Ultimately, the choice between these cards will depend on individual preferences and the specific games one intends to play, as not everyone may be comfortable with undervolting or tweaking GPU settings.
It’s worth mentioning that AMD currently has no plans to release an RX 7800 card with lower power settings. However, they do offer the RX 7700 XT, which has a slightly lower TBP out of the box (245W). Gamers who are eagerly awaiting RDNA3 GPUs with a TBP of around 200W may have to wait for the Radeon RX 7600 XT, which has been leaked but not yet officially released.
